That's why the RugGear RG I was almost going to buy is now useless as a purchase target unless 2g stays operating past which it won't. Great price and a very hardy phone. A long time ago they were the bee's knees.

My ZBKL is crap. If that's what you're thinking. 6 inch android phones questions Or how does the messaging app differentiate between the two active numbers, can you choose which number you're sending from when you send an sms? We have an "after hours emergency support" mobile that uses 2 SIMs to ensure that if reception on Vodafone is unavailable we can get coverage via Tesltra. Please see the list of options in my earlier post:

The fact that you said you get signal in roaming mode suggests your phone is getting that signal from another network and it's only good for an emergency cal You got me wrong. Is the above site a trusted site to purchase from? That's what I thought.

I didn't claim they did, only that they are as useful as a dual SIM phone that can only run 2G on one slot when 2G is switched off. Also can you only buy the 32GB online? I am starting to think we might have to wait for the Tesltra 2g shutdown to be sure they will work as we all are hoping. Anyway — knowing that I can get a grey import, and use it without all this mucking around, would be a big help. The second slot can either take a sim OR a sd card — not both together. Only the S7 dual sim import version can use the second sim as a dual sim setup.

Note dual stand-by means both SIMs are 'active' — the phone essentially switches between them multiple times a second time division. I would like dual sim functionality but don't want to roll back.

Another phone to add to the short list! The thing to note is that it is a fairly high priced phone. Does it allow for 2 sim cards as well as the microSD card?
The Chinese photos look like it might be a shared slot. I'm thinking of moving on from the Galaxy S5 Duos also. Really like the specs of the LeEco LeMax 2 but worried has the glitches that are a risk of lesser known brands.
Dreadfully shameful the manufacturers don't provide more definitive information on the operation of their dual sim phones. I am starting to think we might have to wait for the Tesltra 2g shutdown to be sure they will work as we all are hoping.
But how does it work in practice, how do apps know which sim to use to access data and which for normal telecommunications, is hangouts for example smart enough to send a text using sim 1 over 3G and receive a photo on sim 2 over 4g, do they operate concurrently or will my text not send while its receiving the photo from a different contact?
Or how does the messaging app differentiate between the two active numbers, can you choose which number you're sending from when you send an sms? Will my apps all work in the background utilising Sim 2 on 4g and still keep my phone active and on the network to take calls etc on Sim 1 with 3G?
I am really hoping that the new Note 7 will have dual active sims. Probably unlikely but if it does then it will be awesome. I have just checked Good Guys — their Moto G4 plus is single sim only.
If you look on the label the Dual sim has DS at the end of the product code line, mine is. Does the two sims icons on the main screen indicate the networks they are logged into?
On my 3rd Gen the second sim says 4G and the other sim logo does not indicate other than it has reception no 2G. Mine has 4G and 3G next to the signal bars, I also get both network names scrolling along the top of the screen..
I went by the box description and there seemed to be nothing indicating dual sim. The sales staff had no idea. I will check the code later today. So what will happen later this year when 2G is switch off in regards dual sim.
That why I'm asking. Not going to fork a heap money on something now if by the end of year it becomes useless with 2G been shut down. You can still use a Vodafone SIM in 2nd slot they havent yet announced a switch off.
Plus they also haven't been investing in the 2G network for quite a while, I think you would find some pretty patchy reception once relegated to only 2G on vodafone.
Where did you buy the single SIM device? Thats a bit help for those of us who want to keep our phone purchases as simple as possible. I think that's a little misleading — Telstra only sells the single sim variant of the phone which has 32GB storage.
The dual sim variant which comes with 64GB storage has to be imported. FYI — Its a Wiki — If you see something wrong, or something needed to be added, you are welcome to do it yourself.
Moto G4 Plus https: If I get this phone or something else soon I coming from a iPhone to Android and Android is all new to me. Would anyone buy a dual sim phone from Kogan or from another retailer if they knew what they were after,.
With dual sim Moto G4. Is there a need to have virus protection on the phone. So long as you dont root it, and only use the official play store to get apps, there really shouldnt be a need for a virus scanner on a mobile phone.
Another piece of information for the wiki would be how much effort is required to get the phone usable in Australia play store, etc, and what limitations there are after that. From what I have read about the Xiamoni phones, you may need to install a worldwide ROM, need to apply to unlock the bootloader, the location can never be changed to Australia and permission issues with MIUI some Xiamoni technology I think.
Anyway — knowing that I can get a grey import, and use it without all this mucking around, would be a big help. Xiaomi Mi5 in Perth Australia: I would presume so, but if someone has some confirmation I would very much appreciate knowing before I buy, rather than geting an unpleasant surprise.
Can you take a call on Sim1 over 3G and be downloading an app on sim2 over 4g at the same time? Thanks for this thread and wiki, I will the watching it closely. Currently using a dual sim Lumia but I cracked the screen and I'm starting the research my next phone with the impending 2g shut off in mind.
Has Vodafone AU confirmed their shut off yet? Which ever SIM is set to use data will go to 4G if available, while the other stays on 3G and doesn't use data. Hi guys, Looking for a dual sim phone that has either: It also comes with 2x nano adapters if you want to stay with that format.
Not possible I'm afraid, one is provided by work which is micro and can't have it changed in the foreseeable future. Looks like it's exactly what I'm after. It covers all the AU 4G bands iirc. But the GSM Arena specs differs for bands: I read about it's chipset, https: I found one person on Amazon who claims that it does [ http: Very close to buying the Moto G4 Plus, Couple of questions though.
Can someone confirm if the 32GB is 3GB of ram? Also can you only buy the 32GB online? I'd prefer to buy in store so I get the phone on the spot. Does anyone know a good place I can get accessories from?
Ebay doesn't seem to have much locally. Thanks wasn't quite sure from reading the website. Will the extra ram make a big difference? Yeah I would say I dont have as many apps as most people. I do make and receive a lot of calls for work, I spend a lot of the day on the phone.
App wise I mostly have social media apps, sports, weather and maps. The last time I think I played a game on my phone was when my 18 month old was born and I was sitting in the hospital for hours on end.
I don't have the smaller one to compare but it seems to run very well, haven't had it long obviously as they're only new but so far I'm very happy with it, well worth the asking price.
Well I think I'm sold, I'm due for a new phone and need a dual sim and need to plan for the 2g shut down. Just ordered a case and tempered glass so now I'll have a think bout size of phone.
Then with the rest of my tax refund I might need to buy another SG dash cam ;. I guess it's subjective as to how it compares to what you're used to using, I was carrying a Motorola Play and an iPhone 5, now just carrying the G4 plus and it's a good upgrade I feel, the Play was my primary handset and this phone I would consider to be a lot better, I don't do any gaming so not sure how that goes, I am a reasonably heavy phone user though.
I guess it's subjective as to how it compares to what you're used to using,. This will be my 5th dual sim phone as I can't stand having 2 phones. Currently have a Lumia dual sim which I am happy with but got a badly cracked screen and I'd rather put the money towards a new phone then repairs.
Someone who uses one may be able to shed some light on this? What will probably happen is that you'll get a sms reminder stating you received an mms and a link to view it online, like back when people didn't have mms capable phones.
I didn't know the answer so I tried it. The answer wasn't something that I was expecting. The phone Moto G4 temporarily swapped which SIM was set to data, and then swapped back after the message came in!
That's great, I guess it receives a push notification and switches sims, looks like they considered everything when designing it. I am hoping that there will be a dual sim version of the Note 7 that has this capability.
What are most people buying for dual sim units? Moto G4 temporarily swapped which SIM was set to data, and then swapped back after the message came in! Currently I usually have my personal sim set for data.
If someone sends a picture to my work sim I get an sms to download it, Have to swap the data sim, wait a couple of minutes and then download it. That's what I was expecting.
I was totally unprepared for how easy it was. Thinking back, I have been getting MMS's in this way but until I stopped and watched it in action I hadn't realised how easily and seemlessly it all happens: New dual sim phone from Kogan running Helio P10 processor.
Does anyone have any insight on whether the 2nd sim reverts to 2G? Are you trying out this phone as well. If you are could come back with a update on performance once you had a bit of time with it.
I would expect so. That's what I thought. I am surprised that someone would start to sell a phone that will soon have a "as good as obsolete" feature of dual sim!
Just wanted to make it known that another new dual sim was available — although in this case the second sim slot will just become a parking place for a spare sim.
So its not totally obsolete — just depends on your usage. And there is no 2g network in Seoul. Which is one of the reasons why Samsung doesn't release dual sim phones at home.
Admittedly, this is about that same level of functionality as possible with a dual SIM adapter without its problems. However, dual SIM adapters are much cheaper than the cost differential of a dual over single SIM variant of a phone model.
Finite State Machine writes Dual sim adapters are waste of money. The ones sold locally appear to be exactly the same at 10x the cost. Maybe the local customer support is better Unfortunately, they won't fit every phone, but they do fit a wider variety of models than the sellers typically advertise iPhones or Samsung Galaxys since they only rely on SIM toolkit support and the phone not barfing as the adapter swaps the SIM over.
Yes but they don't let you have work and personal SIMs active at the same time. And with more mobiles using SIM trays now, means you have to have a wire coming out of the phone and into a case.
I didn't claim they did, only that they are as useful as a dual SIM phone that can only run 2G on one slot when 2G is switched off. I hope this doesn't come through as a stupid question.
Other than using the 2nd sim slot for obviously a 2nd sim or extra storage, what other reasons are people using dual sim phones for. I've been using a dual sim phone over the past year and a bit — Oppo R7 and Huawei P8.
My main number was used to receive calls as I was on a cheap telstra contract. I used a starter kit to make calls and use data in the 2nd sim. I have now moved my main number to prepaid porting between providers using cheap starter kits each month.
It was so people always see my main number. I have set up a backup number to accumulate credits when using telstra starter kits and anyone else in my family. Now I only really use 1 sim my main number because I just port between providers.
The reason I'd like one as I have one SIM on a PAYG plan with one provider with my "permanent" number which has a reasonable call rate for calls and txt but expensive data, and I have another SIM with cheap data that I would like to use in my phone as well as my main number.
That's probably atypical, but I'm sure the main reasons would be to get a better combination of rates or just to have 2 numbers e. Hi Ziggster I don't think LeoH has posted correct information?
Your link doesn't work. There is also a lengthy phone specific therad: That's exactly how I'm using my Moto G2 at the moment. Has worked well so far, but I'm starting to experience issues in more and more areas that no longer have the 2G available so I'll have to upgrade soon.
Sort of, with the usual dual standby limitations. If you are using data and a call comes in on the other sim there are two options depending on which Connection priority you have selected.
Incoming calls on the non-data enabled SIM go to voicemail if data is active. Data is stopped to receive calls on the non-data enabled SIM. The main thing is that the non-data enabled SIM can receive 3G calls and isn't restricted to 2G only.
Others have other reasons but dual SIM works for me. Not when 2G is no longer available, hence this thread. There is also a vast difference in cost. It's probably worth pointing out that not all dual SIM active standby phones has the same capability.
For example, I don't think all can accept an incoming call while using data like the Moto G2 mentioned above. Whatever the solution it beats switching SIMs.
I think that's pretty bad, actually. If I'm overseas I don't want my phone deciding for me which sim is the data sim, that's why I buy dual-sim phones in the first place.
I don't want to wear international roaming charges because some dope sends me a cat video or something. If you can do data restriction on single sim phone, you will be able to do the same on a dual sim phone as well.
Just simply disable second sim to use data in any condition. They use the same processor though I'm considering getting the S7 edge and hoping for this upgrade to come to it as well Neither is the Note 7 but this article states that it will be in Q4 after a firmware upgrade so hopefully the S7 may get the same upgrade.
If I'm overseas I don't want my phone deciding for me which sim is the data sim. In the post you cite, south coast angus is referring to receiving an MMS. These use a different APN or are at least usually charged differently for than regular internet data.
The phone is doing the right thing in my opinion, pretty much what a single SIM phone would do. The only objection may be if you have the other SIM set with an always on data connection and this session needs to close.
For internet data, I'm sure the phone would use whatever SIM its configured to use. You can of course contact the provider of your Australian SIM to disable whatever functionality you wish while you are overseas.
Alternatively, most phones can have data roaming disabled. Interesting to know if this firmware upgrade applies to both the Exynos and Snapdragon configurations. We know the SD chipset is capable, but far the wiki on dual sim doesn't state that Exynos is able to handle 3G-4G dual operations.
There are 2 settings which cover this. Seems no 4G and 3G. So that make the RG completely useless for what I need a genuine dual-sim ruggesd non-shonky Chinese branded handset running Android 5.
There are, apparently, very few handsets that can do it. Might have to resort to having two seperate phones from December this year when Telstra 2g shuts down. Check the wiki of this post.
There are a number of handsets listed in confirmed to support 3G dual standby. Can also get the 32GB version https: By that I mean the phone has both sims active requiring no 'switching' between one or the other to receive calls or txt's.
Both sims are live at the same time. Perhaps its because 2g radio hardware is totally different, or because 2g and 3g can use the same antenna config in the phone to work but 4g and 3g cannot? Yep that's definitely an issue.
The best phones ever for long battery life are the Sonim XP3 series 2g phones — I used to have one of those and it's battery lasted a whole week between charges if I wasn't using it much.
My current dual-sim Toughshield phone can't go more than a day on standby without a charge unless I turn off mobile data and basically cripple all the handy apps like gmail.
I can find some proof pics using China carriers. Here is the Chinese forume: People here are not discussing a different topic than you do. While both sims are active for phone calls and sms as long as you do not intend to use data from the data sim while have phone call from other sim.
It is confirmed that once a call comes in from the other sim, your data will be suspended until the call finishes. Xperia X Performance manual says the same thing: The more expensive X Performance has a Snapdragon Why is there a lack of mobiles with 3 slots.
Because then you're compounding the problem even further. A real genuine dual-sim phone regardless if dual-active or not requires two sets of radio hardware otherwise it's not possible to have two sims active and registered at the same time.
To do that with three sims while definitely possible then requires three sets of radio hardware, a LOT more battery capacity, plus you get serious problems with antenna design.
I think you misunderstood. I am guessing the poster wants a 2 sim phone where the sd slot is NOT shared with the second sim. In my current android phone there's no correlation between sd card access and sim cards — apps, etc.
The phone could have ten sims and ten sets of radio hardware and battery and processing power notwithstanding have all 10 sims active and registered, and the sd card is sitting there available to all apps and factory-supplied software modules to use as necessary.
Maybe later Android versions or IOS versions do actually have the ability to configure which SIM can access the sd card but I haven't come across one that does yet with the phones I've owned.
As I said I don't think you get what the poster wants. A lot of dual sim phones coming out now only have two physical slots. The second slot can either take a sim OR a sd card — not both together.
So you can have 2 sim cards and NO sd card or one sim and one sd card. It got nothing todo with the radio thing. Only the S7 dual sim import version can use the second sim as a dual sim setup.
The local version looks like a second sim but it only has SD card functionality. The import version can with a bit of tinkering be used as a second sim with an SD card but it is a tricky mod from what I have read.
The Australian version is only a single sim phone. It is a great phone. That's why the RugGear RG I was almost going to buy is now useless as a purchase target unless 2g stays operating past which it won't.
I've got an LGv10 dual sim, I have a Telstra sim in port 1 and Amaysim in port 2 if there's no data transimission, there are no logos above either signal strength bar..
That's exactly how it works. I don't know that it is that usual. At least for devices with a 2G SIM slot. They only pattern I was ever was able to discern was that Chinadroids were more likely to have fixed assignments.
I think it's been pretty common in the past two years. Prior to that fixed assignment was more common. It may be more prevalent amongst phones with MTK chipsets. It is prudent to check this on dual SIM active stand-by phones with differing band capabilities per slot.
I'm coming from Nexus 5x so a similar performance level would be ideal. Not listed in the Wiki. For now I'd be looking at the Taiwan import ZF3 5. Maybe the Redmi 4 if Xiaomi ever releases it.
Soc means System on Chip. Looks like the Umi Plus Extreme might be first out of the box with the P20 http: The ZUK forums has good instructions for that. Definitely standby 4G capable in both slots the nominate primary SIM gets 4G, the other gets 3G, but doesn't matter which slot you use.
ZUI very iOS like, so unlikely to officially come into Au due to copyright, but works great for me as my primary is an iPhone. But Telstra Blue Tick has other requirements as well.
So unless they sell a dual SIM phone, none will have blue tick. Thanks for the reply's I currently have a samsung duos young and have to update 2G turned off soon. I was hoping to find a dual sim replacement with better reception but not necessarily blue tick but still work in rural areas with reasonable coverage.
I was hoping to find a dual sim replacement with better reception but not necessarily blue tick. If a Telstra sold a blue tick dual sim phone the dual sim functionality would probably be disabled.
One of the advantages of dual sim phones is having one sim for data and the other for calls to reduce how much you pay to the carriers. Don't think any of them would sell dual sim phones for this reason so there will probably never be a blue tick dual sim phone.
Vodafone had a dual sim phone a while back but they crippled it by disabling one of the sim slots. Snapdragon is relatively new and was released at the same time as the better specced which does support it.
Just 8 A53 chips like the lower end Mediatek's. In any event — the phone has some issues: And Vodafone shutdown date also announced www. Anyone seen the Alcatel Idol 4 and 4S?
Looks like good competitors to the Moto G4s, and a bit smaller which appeals to me. I couldn't find any mention on here, sorry if I missed it. Also Blackberry have released a rebranded version of the same phone DTEK50 , but seems to have disabled the second sim slot and made it SD card only.
Apart from the DTEK50 which is in the wild, I have actually seen an Alcatel Idol 4 for sale anywhere none on ebay for example although plenty of accessories. Agree that hybrid slots are the devil incarnate, what point a dual SIM if you can't fully use both slots.
Then I will revert to two seperate phones. Going to be no choice since my phone s need to be rugged ones due to the type of work environment. Sadly it's not really possible to make the telco's keep 2g going except on Xmas Island if they've made commercial decisions based around the licensing requirements for the spectrum allocations and other factors.
I boycotted the Census and won but don't think I can win at keeping 2g going as a single consumer of the services. Is vodafone an option for you for 2g? Coverage They are shutting 2g off next September.
My plan is to switch my voice sim to vodafone come december. Keep my data sim on Telstra. Would like to get more life out of my Letv 1s. Im very tempted though by the ZTE Axon 7. Might make the Elephone S7 an interesting choice.
Moto Z to the list, just released here in Australia. Also the cheaper Moto Z Play with a chipset and a few other downgraded specs. Yep, I'm running the Moto G4 Plus with chipset at the moment.
Moto has lost their minds while designing the Z series It will struggle to last a day Found this form and associated wiki to be very helpful. It's stated as confirmed at launch but the manufacturers own spec sheet doesn't appear to support this.
Table of data https: The ZTE is available for presale here www. As it seems to be an updated version of the Xepria performance which is 4g and 3g sim, I presume it will also be dual 4g and 3G.
Does anyone have any experience or confirm the dual sim feature will operate on 4g and 3g at the same time. Your device supports the use of two different networks at the same time.
You can select from the following network mode combinations when two SIM cards are inserted in your device: Different status icons are displayed in the status bar depending on the type or mode of network that you are connected to.
Refer to Icons in the status bar to see what the different status icons look like. The primary consideration for me anyway is that I need a rugged dual-sim phone that will not force the second sim to only use 2g when the first sim is also active.
My second sim stops working in less than a month, if Telstra really does disable all it's central 2g servers HLR, etc. John Willie Gee writes The Zenfone 3 models are now on the confirmed list.
Looks like the new Kirin on the Huwaei Mate 9 can also be added to the list. Maybe we can also add which phones are stupid enough to have hybrid slots in them. I haven't seen any Samsung devices yet, I wonder whether they'll release one, ones that don't explode, of course.
Wasn't even announced as a feature on the Kenzo, so no guarantee it actually comes across. Exactly what's been holding me off. Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge dual sim running nougat now supports 3G on the second sim.
You can receive calls on any sim while on a call. I can see in mobile networks that my sim 1 can use 3G https: When making a call on sim 1, data is not allowed this thread wouldn't reload so that would indicate to me that when in a call the other radio is disabled.
SM-GFD, obviously the dual sim model. Great to have dual active sims with the nougat upgrade. It is only available with the nougat update. I noticed it when I updated the firmware to nougat.
I am sure that there is a screenshot somewhere. I haven't looked for links on this but I doubt that I am the first person to notice it. If you do find a link post it anyway. According to the specs here — https: I am thinking of one of these Elephone S7 knock off chinese phones Has a Snapdragon so same as G4 Plus but lots of other phones aren't supporting the feature.
What on the UM site makes you think it does. All I can see is a statement that it supports 4G and 3G networks. I could not find any other reference that it is able to so I asked the question on XDA forums, and got a simple no it can't:.
I was a little sceptical as it doesn't explicitly say what it does simultaneously, however, when googling around I found the following statement from Samsung Hong Kong website:.
I could not find any other reference that it is able to so I asked the question on XDA forums, and got a simple no it can't: Pretty easy for someone to say that not knowing the correct information.
I will try to take a screenshot and post it. I was surprised that it was in the nougat beta update. Samsung in Singapore announced it so maybe google that. I did find the following link to a singapore forum claiming 3G support for dual sim on the Galaxy S7, only in selected countries, I think I am reading it right:.
Samsung SG state it will come by Q4 so they still got time. Samsung did release the 3G suppprt for dual SIM with firmware: Singapore is the only country left out in this update. As for your question to Android 7.
Korea only so don't expect official stable release to reach Singapore that fast. Ok just to update the Samsung S7 dual sim model. I generally don't run dual sims but today I was going to post a screenshot showing that it does display 3G on the second sim.
In the menu that is the case However I changed the data sim to the second one and the first one fell back to 2G. So I guess that is why nougat is still in beta. I do believe that it will have this functionality soon but for now it is not working.
Sorry for any misinformation. BTW, interesting when I read about Netcom 2. Would be interesting to test whether the Australian carriers care if they see two IMEI on their network at the same time.
Is it obvious which number incoming calls or sms are from? I've got a work phone and personal phone and really don't want to let customers get my personal number!
Depending on the phone some are more obvious than others. As jokiin mentioned when calling all can be set to prompt which sim. The better ones prompt you for the name of the SIM that you define instead of just he number making it more obvious.
More importantly it can be hard to see the sim sms is sending because they don't normally prompt, you have to be careful to look at the sim indicator near the "send" button.
When taking on my first dual sim, I did make a few mistakes sending work stuff on my personal SIM, but quickly got the hang of it, until I changed phones. I used to use Dual Sim Selector apk from pixel rush.
I haven't got it to work on my latest phone but if they fix the bug I'll be using it again. That sounds very handy! I do try to make sure all my work contacts are in my work google account, and personal kept separate, so that sort of automation would be really handy.
Cheers for the info. Now to try pick a phone My wife has a 32GB model. No NFC, no message light. Could have gone the 5. After considering everything, 5" phone and support for B28 were most important things for me I use Optus and here in Canberra they don't have access to all the other frequencies available everywhere else.
Here's a thread I've found as well: Think it is doubtful as well. I've put an new post on their thread asking for a screenshot of the the sim status. Not sure if we'll get a response as the last post was back in June.
I am sorry that we cannot provide screenshots for now since we don't have the unboxed LG G5 on hand for review. I will try to repost the screenshots once available. Looks like there is a good chance it will do it, but with all this confusion only screenshots of the SIM status will settle it once and for all.
What a farce from the manufacturers. The specs I'm looking for are: From the Wiki link, it looks as though there is no such phone on sale in Australia and dubiously anywhere else in the world.
Kogan have a parallel import Moto E3 but it doesn't have band That suits my needs as I just need it to access security code texts sent from Australia when I'm overseas so I know when they're coming.
Agreed, any manufacturer releasing a dual SIM phone here in Australia should be very explicit in declaring the 2G limitation. If not surely consumers will be able exercise their rights about it not being fit for purpose.
Due to my phone being dropped and needing to purchase right away, I did not have the luxury of waiting it out for suitable products to be released. Presumably Motorola wanted a cheaper price point phone.
Agree though it should be clearly disclosed to purchasers or dropped — like Oppo who released an AU model as a single SIM phone. If you push it to 5. Thanks for the suggestion but I'm happy with about 4.
I'm hoping the Zenphone Go works out. Hi All, The telstra 2g will be switched off tomorrow 1st Dec I am using samsung s7 edge duos. I noticed when I first set up to have both sim working last time Jan Recently after the phone last phone update Oct I am not sure is that means i will still able to have both active after the switch off.
I think we should be able to find out tomorrow. Both SIMs are on Telstra. ROM is the android OS. Specific carrier or country has specific ROM. Telstra using its own ROM same as Optus. I don't think there is any doubt with those screenshots.
I'm on stock Android 6. Phone is UAE variant. That good news, it indicates it will likely be a universal update, not region specific to those that are shutting down their 2G network like Singapore.
After installing this update, my sim behaviour didn't change — 1 sim still has to be 2G only. Both have the same Exynos chips, but doesn't mean they get updated on the same cycle e.
Both have the same Exynos chips, but doesn't mean they get updated on the same cycle. The 2 sim still working fine after the switch off. I did try to set one of the sim to 2G only cause I am not sure has Telstra switch off totally on scheduled to start switching on today one after another.
I tested this on my device this morning and have the same experience. The result is the 2G only sim will still get signal but in roaming mode. Try making a call before you get too excited.
The fact that you said you get signal in roaming mode suggests your phone is getting that signal from another network and it's only good for an emergency call. You got me wrong. I switch to 2G only to see if I still getting signal to proof that Telstra did switch it off. Mine still using Telstra ROM. For others — can you post exactly what ROM and where you got it, and maybe the GFD users can try something similar.
So, the second sim Telstra in my OnePus 2 dual sim phone no longer operates after Telstra shut down their 2G network overnight. Key requirements are dual sim obviously the second sim is 3G and not 2G when on standby, Snapdragon or higher CPU, 5.
Band 28 support would be great but not essential. I'm looking for a replacement phone and would really appreciate any recommendations. This thread seems to relate to dual sim phones but for years i have used triple sims for businesses and personal use which has been very practice, Of course today i find that my Acer E tripple sim smartphone now only has one active sim as i am with telstra, Cant believe it..
I have googled but cant seem to find triple sims with all three on 3g or 4g at once, Really at a loss. Maybe i switch to Voda until next September and hope phone manufacturers get with the times by then.
I have been using dual sim phones for the last 5 years, and this is the first time I've heard of a triple SIM phone Agreed, it will need a lot more telcos to shutdown their 2G networks.
I'm surprised we have the capability with dual-sim phones now, I didn't think the dual-sim market in Australia had that much influence as the phones are not sold by the carriers I'm surprised we have the capability with dual-sim phones now, I didn't think the dual-sim market in Australia had that much influence as the phones are not sold by the carriers.
It's people holding onto old feature phones that had GSM. That's why we still have the 2G around. A long time ago they were the bee's knees. Still people using them, I think.
Australian dual-sim, it's the telcos who are preventing OEMs from making available duals. Actually no one except the customer benefits we buy less phones and we make smarter use of plans Certainly why they don't subsidise or distribute them, but there simply aren't that many dual-sims produced compared to single, apart from the China market where it seems far more common and as I understand it phones generally aren't carrier subsidised.
Hi all, i have spent countless hours looking up relevant info and also read all above comments regarding dual 3G sim phones and this forum has been very helpful. My question is I am looking at getting a Motorola z play.
Has anyone got one and if so are you happy with its dual sim functions and phone quality? This firmware hasn't been uploaded on Sammobile. S7 Edge users can do the same thing.
Yes had one for a couple of weeks now. Loving it and it's awesome battery life. If your firmware combination is different from Samsung's stock one, you cannot get update.
It will just show that the current version is up to date. Hi There, I'm looking at one of these phones too. But I have an Australia-bought Gear S So I have added a card and paid with it using the watch: That was not correct.
Although the phone shows full bars for both network. What's the network type for the SIM card that's not selected for 4G? Is it 3G or 2G? It doesn't have a microSD card slot but 64 GB of internal memory should be enough.
I keep on seeing words of caution on this forum, but there's also some praises though. Thanks for that Alacritas. I must be getting tired not to notice that.
I'll start all over in the morning. It's getting so complicated that I might just keep my existing 3G phone as the second sim slot. I edited the wiki and added a new field and clarification as all phones listed are dual stand-by phones.
For me I love streaming music and using the net for hours on my data only sim and if I got a message on my other sim want to be able to reply without any interruption. Wiki's can also create a searchable table which might be good to look into if this becomes a popular listing.
Are you sure about this? Can you put in a Telstra sim in slot 2 and try to make calls while 4G is activated on slot 1. Would you please post screen shots and youtube video.
I posted a while back that 3G was available on the second sim a while back but once I tested it I realised that it may say 3G on the second sim but if you try to use it then it will drop down to 2G.
That was on the nougat beta for the S7 Edge. This functionality is meant to be available at least in Singapore before the end of the year. Double check the last two digits which should be K5, not J2.
J2 version had the bug that you mentioned, but it's fixed in K5. I can make a phone call using my second sim Telstra prepaid while my main sim Optus is connected to LTE.
Of course, the second sim cannot be used for data connection although it's on 3G network. The second sim can be definitely used for a voice call and SMS messaging while the main sim is connected to LTE network.
One thing I just noticed is that the data connection on the main sim will be lost during a phone call using the second sim. Once you start a phone call with the second sim, the main sim's data connection is lost and cannot use internet during the call.
It is instantly recovered after the call though. I am really enjoying nougat. I would like dual sim functionality but don't want to roll back. I would presume that if I did it may work but I would lose it again if I chose to go back to nougat again so it's probably not worth it at the moment.
I would think that nougat would support this in the future. I have read there have been updates to the S7 Snapdragon models which enabled it but these are only single sim.
I want to pull the trigger on an S7 dual sim non-edge for my father in law but the inconsistent reports are holding me back. I have moto g2 now that 2g has been stopped I can only use one Sim at a time.
So when I'm using Sim 2 which is most of the time I miss calls and text on Sim 1 where ad before I used to see them when 2g was active. I have a grandfathered prepaid encore in Sim one which I use for my calls and text which I want to keep and the expiry isn't until and a prepaid plus in Sim 2 that I use mainly for data.
Can anyone tell me which phones would work for me Thanks: Currently have a Samsung Mega 5. Am after Dual Active and large screen. Can anyone tell me which phones would work for me.
I'm really happy about this 'cause buying another handset so soon after getting the S7 would have been annoying, but not as annoying as having to carry a second phone around with me.
I had no idea it already had the hardware for the job. A cheaper phone that specs dual 4g, I am guessing in use 1 x 4g and 1 x 3g? The reviews look pretty good and a lot of bands.
The more simultaneously better than 2G phone the better, but do confirm before purchase. See here as mentioned on prior page: If the specs at http: I run a non-band 28 device and have no issues within 50k of a capital city.
Anybody shares some light? Read somewhere that its incompatible but thought i verify this Hi tychiang82, I borrowed a Telstra SIM with data plan: Before you get too excited though, check the areas that you wish to use it in: I bought the Taiwanese version the day it was released from an eBay vendor and it arrived today.
But why the new charging plug instead of the classic Micro USB connector? Leo H can you please link me to where you were able to purchase this as this is exactly what im looking for.
If he runs out he will surely get more in a few days. This is the one I bought. It's for my wife. If it was for me I'd buy the 64GB version, which this seller also had at the time. He's a reliable seller — this is the 3rd phone I've bought off him over the years.
Or just search Zenfone 3 on eBay. Make sure it's the Zenfone 3, not the Zenfone Pegasus 3 or others. Note, you would want the 64 GB one as the second sim card slot is also the SD card slot. Its one or the other and not 2 sim cards and a memory card.
Works just as I was hoping. But I agree, go for the 64GB model. Whoever thought sharing the 2nd SIM slot with the SD card should have been sacked before they came up with that idea. It should have a separate SD slot.
Thanks for the information. Never can trust sales staff when the language is a problem and the device hasn't been released. Perhaps next trip I'll pickup the Zenfone 3. Agree with that statement..
I suspect some manufacturers will come up with a SD card with a slot for a nano sim to fit in. Had to google this idea as it never occurred to me. Great information out there so perhaps it would be smart to combine a simcard and sd card in future.
And I hate the SIM tray. I liked the good old "take the back off the phone and insert both sims into the appropriate slots" way of doing things, together with a separate micro-SD slot in there somewhere.
I liked the good old "take the back off the phone and insert both sims into the appropriate slots". I agree, having just got a moto G4 Plus where they have even done away with the spring load sim which was an issue if the nano sim was loose within the micro sim.
It's great, push it in an stays there. They even supply a nice adapter tray for nano sims. Separate sdcard slot as well. Think a Mi Max might be in my future. I might burn and hack my SIM not the work one though.
Can someone tell me whether this http: I have read the wiki on here and it is not in there, but I can't tell by looking at the ad, and I read through the questions asked on the site but nobody seems to have asked this particular question.
The phone looks good though, and I like the price a lot. Also, what would the pitfalls be of purchasing from the site Gearbest where I have linked to? I get that the warranty would probably not be worth much at all, but for the price I am willing to take a gamble.
I also like it has an extra slot for the SD card. I am extremely happy with it so far. At the same time? I was under the impression if you are on call 1 with sim 1 3G then call 2 on sim 2 is only 2G.
Therefore, when 2G shuts down in Australia, this phone which runs a MTK Helio X10 processor will drop the 2nd call or it wont come through. It has both sims live, active and registered on networks simultaneously assuming the radio hardware used for each can find a suitable network.
I can configure it to make calls on either SIM, txts on either sim, or data connections on either sim. Outgoing calling, txts or data connections can only ever by on one sim or the other, not both at the same time.
But for receiving calls, it'll get them on both meaning I can be on a call using sim 1 and still receive a call using sim 2 at the same time and switch between if I need to.
I hate the idea of two seperate phones. I have one sim for personal, another for business. Cheapo consumer grade phones are useless in my job. Can someone tell me the implications of this?
I've just bought a Nokia running Windows 10 and have discovered this same problem. I can live with this arrangement until G shuts down, but what will happen then? Will I still receive them?
For most of us we will be forced to get two seperate handsets with one sim in each. What's wrong with the previously mentioned Motorola Moto G4? For me it would have been perfect but I'm looking for a 5" phone rather than a 5.
Mate, I was exactly the same as you but I bought one, used it for a few weeks and then went back to my old phone because of the 5. Of course, getting older the eyesight played a part ;. But, I also missed the fingerprint scanner, fast laser auto focus on the camera, the great dual SIM functionality AND the battery life light to medium user here.
I'm still not wrapped with the extra bulk of the handset in my pocket but I'm getting very used to it and the plus sides of the handset far outweigh the negatives — for me anyway.
If you can lay your hands on a 5. Moto Z Play too, not sure about Moto Z. Except on closer inspection A-GPS only. Thats a deal killer for me which is a shame as everything else looks great. Well I think A-GPS uses info from other sources such as network towers to help a phone get a faster GPS fix but Im hardly an expert and would love to be wrong here as I like the look of this phone.
My issue was a wiki page that had a section that suggested to me that a phone may have A-GPS but not GPS and if that was the case it would not get a good GPS fix outside of network or wifi reception which is important for me.
Wiki quote is from https: If it also has functioning autonomous GPS, it may use standalone GPS, which is sometimes slower on time to first fix, but does not depend on the network, and therefore can work beyond network range, and without incurring data usage fees.
Dude, all phones these days also have a dedicated GPS chip. Perhaps im being overly paranoid. I did have a cheap chinese phone a few years ago that only had A-GPS and not 'proper' GPS and it was a pain to use a work in remote areas.
Sounds like thats no longer something that happens and I dont need to worry about it. I also went Asus as they supported more 4G bands Will return to Cubot I recently dropped my Oneplus X again so I had to pull the trigger on my replacement phone.
I still felt the 5. One downside is that it does not have the FM radio so I'll have to use the streaming services instead. Does anyme know if the Mate 9 will be a contender?
I just tried a Moto G4 Play. No screenshots, but in this review http: Only screenshot of the phone with 2 simcards inside can give final decision.. That's why I asked about if anybody tested..
Slightly more modern chip and in my view better design sold me over the G4. Slightly more modern chip and in my view better design. The specs said that both slots were 4G, so I got one.
But what happens is that when I switch one slot to 4G, the other goes to 2G.

The fact that you said you get signal in roaming mode suggests your phone is getting that signal from another network and it's only good for an emergency cal.
Thank you to Jjayj and to the Whirlpool hive-mind for saving me a few hundred bucks. Back to the topic at hand, both SIMs in the phone worked as hoped today, and I had the added bonus of being able to rub it gently in the face of a coworker having the same problem with his phone — a Huawei of some description.
Optus haven't shut down 2G. Would suggest iinet is set as the data SIM. Irrespective of whether either SIM is on a network that may or may not have shutdown the 2G network, the screenshots show one SIM connected to 4G while the other is on 3G.
Both sims are Telstra, and both are working. Or should I wait for the S8 which is just around the corner Pumpino provided links here to flash the phone: Be careful, this phone comes in single sim and dual sim variants.
The Australian Motorola website says it is the XT http: This site that lists all the variants http: Other sites say it is the dual SIM. Since you will be buying from an official Australian channel where the local telcos seem push against dual SIM phones, make sure you examine it carefully before purchasing.
Anything similar for the Moto E 2nd Gen? Got this phone less than 6 months ago and unfortunately, didn't know the Telstra 2G network was going off before I purchased it. Also be aware that the sim pins in this phone can break.
Once I had a dual-sim phone, its single sim now. Wikipedia provides the best description imho Dual standby phones, such as those running on Mediatek chipsets, allows both SIMs to be accessed through time multiplexing.
When making or receiving calls, the modem locks to the active channel; the other channel would be ignored and thus unavailable during the duration of the call. I've been reading the past few pages.
I haven't done alot of research though. So what phones that do have dual sim, support Optus's LTE bands? And how about support for SD card? Lets see with a different set of requirements? I am looking but I can't find anything of this spec.
OR moto g4 plus but you miss out on NFC. Have you read the Wiki?? It summarises a bunch of phone bands and prices. I have looked everywhere but cannot find confirmation that it does. Budget Mediatek chip, even the mid-range Mediatek P10 doesn't generally support it.
I know that what gearbest is saying might not be correct so I still believe Ziggster. Anybody else who got this phone who can confirm? I have been looking at the Nubia Z7 max which is a two year old phone.
It has NFC and is now selling at a competitive price. Does anybody has experience with this phone? Re Nubia Z7 Max. Yes, you are probably right. Nothing beats actual experience though.
That is why I am asking those who have this phone to confirm that the advice given by the seller is incorrect. The Z7 Max gets very good reviews. Too bad it will not be dual capable in Australia by the end of next year.
It is not on the wiki list.
So I have the same question as user 'b'. Is there a dual SIM phone that will do both slots on 4G at the same time?
Huawei's website seems to confirm it will only run 2G: The other SIM card slot only supports 2G networks. You can also configure the default card for mobile data and phone calls according to your monthly plan.
The Huawei Mate 9 is the one. I own this handset and I confirmed that it has both sim as 3g compatible before purchase. Its an amazing phone with great battery life. Having both slots as 3G compatible is different to them both running 3G at the same time though.
Does this share the second sim slot for microSD or has it got a dedicated SD slot. LG V20 ticks those boxes - pretty impressive phone from specs and reviews - still thinking about it - it's big.
LG phones are known to get itself into bootloops at random. Still seems to happen with the V20 although not that significant. Just after an update from anyone in the know.
That one will be using 4G until you change it to the other SIM. I'm starting to think it might take a very long time before they bother: VoLTE is restricted to a very small set of handsets running carrier firmware, and I don't think any Aus carrier firmware for dual SIMs they don't like them.
I have had similar issues to the above posts. We have an "after hours emergency support" mobile that uses 2 SIMs to ensure that if reception on Vodafone is unavailable we can get coverage via Tesltra.
It is by far the best phone I have ever used. Archive View Return to standard view. No there is no phone like this. I started this exact same topic 6 months ago. Xiaomi Mi5" Not yet sure how to check this claim but it could be something for you to check out.
As above the Snapdragon can do this and phones are just starting to be released Eg Xiaomi Mi5. What are your thoughts? It's only a Qualcomm chipset. Moto G is a mid-range phone. Yeah check the new Moto g thread, was also mentioned in the launch video held in India.
I see you have the phone and have posted pics in another thread. Does anyone have a xiaomi mi5? Can they verify if 4G works with all three carriers? How much did you get it for?
Read somewhere that its incompatible but thought i verify this If the specs at http: Leo H can you please link me to where you were able to purchase this http: Contact him to see if he'll get more 64GB stock if that's what you're after.
You were informed wrongly.. I suspect some manufacturers will come up with a SD card with a slot for a nano sim to fit in Had to google this idea as it never occurred to me. I liked the good old "take the back off the phone and insert both sims into the appropriate slots" I agree, having just got a moto G4 Plus where they have even done away with the spring load sim which was an issue if the nano sim was loose within the micro sim.
What do you think AGPS is? It's not a lesser thing If that's what you're thinking. My issue was a wiki page that had a section that suggested to me that a phone may have A-GPS but not GPS and if that was the case it would not get a good GPS fix outside of network or wifi reception which is important for me Wiki quote is from https: I did have a cheap chinese phone a few years ago that only had A-GPS and not 'proper' GPS and it was a pain to use a work in remote areas Sometimes the cheaper chinese phones are ok.
With only a Mediatek I would say no. Personally if I decided to go for a 5. To date none of the Kirin chips have supported it. I will keep an eye out as more people get their hands on it.
Dumb question - while I have connection.
