Has 12 months Aussie warranty. I've had it for about 1 month so far and I'm very happy with it so far. I have unlocked the bootloader but there are a few ROM's that don't need an unlocked bootloader and have root enabled.

Id recommend the Xiaomi Mi4S or Mi5 if you can afford just that little bit more. They look nice, but probably a bit more than I was willing to spend. The Mi4 looks OK, and decently specced.

For those looking to root the phone and install a custom ROM, just forget it! The ROM is totally locked down. I have tried everything to root this thing. The external micro SD can be configured as the default write device so your camera and most other apps will put their content there.

Since they're usually nightlies, I just check manually on my OnePlus One. It downloads the ROM in the background and then asks you to agree to apply the update. I am running it on my Mi3 which was also on the list for the first phones to get Android 6 my version number is 6.

So I assume it maintains apps, settings and data like a regular Android update? If so that's hella cool. However, that's just because I prefer supersu to superuser that CM includes by default in the developer menu, and because I have a custom DPI.

Minimum android versions required is highly subjective and is basically up to the developer of the app and the app requirements but as a rule anything from say android 4 or 4.

I honestly don't think there'll be any app issues, a lot of phones only ever see slight updates and rarely upgrades unless it is a flagship. The Google Play store recognises what android version you are on and will only show you the apps compatible with it.

Main concern to me would be a key-logger, as nothing else on the phone is sensitive, but key logging my Password Safe would be a real problem. I think the Mi Max gonna sell like hotcakes.

Just want to warn anybody who's contemplating an Elephone P I bought one about a month back and returned it inside of 2wks. It was built well physically, but everytime i used i noticed something else that wasn't working.

I was desperately hanging out for a software update so that the camera was actually useable, really — it was that bad. Once it came it wiped out cellular data access.

Nothing at all, all gone. Don't even get me started about battery life Elephone were exactly zero help. Antelife where i got it from are incompetent and rarely respond to emails, and if they do it's somebody different from the previous response.

Paypal have surprisingly been no help whatsoever so i'll likely be out of pocket. A phone that you might like to look into is the Umi Super. It has very decent specs and comes with stock Marshmallow.

It's the only Umi phone I've seen that supports both 3G and I'm done experimenting with other Chinese brands. I've used Xiaomi before and that'll do me fine for a secondary device.

Huawei i'd be content if price wise they didn't miss the mark. Actually, the Umi Iron and Touch have received a lot of negative feedback online. Scratch my excitement for the Super. Zopo Speed 8 has just arrived. About 15mm taller than my Zopo but very nice so far. Just have to do an update. It installed everything from my automatically. Past age when I obsessed over details and just needed to buy a phone right now, so went with Moto G5 Plus.

With a quick search, i see i can get a used Galaxy S6 for about the same price as a Moto E. Of course, the OS might not be the latest, the battery might not be as good anymore, etc.

The other thing this article ignores is that you are far better off sticking with an interface you know. One major dislike on the Moto G5 Plus is that its Android security patch level is still at Jan with no set date as to when it will be up to date.

Phone manufacturers should really try harder to keep up to date with these security patches and please no pointing fingers with network carriers especially with unlock phones. I am almost certain that it is the best choice available in Budget Android Smartphones.

I need help escalating a wireless carrier issue. The phone data never works for more than a day or two. Voice always works, but data never works. After hours of tech support and some major reboots etc, it might work for a day and then boom, back to no internet.

Seen the problem recur in 3 different states so its not a location issue. Antennae bar is usually full, and in fact a Verizon iPhone sitting next to it has full data always. Tech support has even replaced the instrument once and the SIM card twice.

But what do u say about Nexus 5x speaker and call quality? Too fixated on hardware specs. Getting software updates in particular security updates in timely fashion is also a huge part of the whole user experience.

Many OEMs are bad bad bad at this. They sell you a flashy phone, then they abandon you. The lack of ongoing support cannot make up the minor advantage in hardware specs. I found that with the Moto G, the t-mobile reception was so bad as to make the phone nearly worthless as an actual phone.

Any suggestions on smaller phones? I want something with decent specs 4. The 6P does not have an equally good screen as the Note 5. The Note 5 gets much brighter, reaching over nits in brightness while the 6P only breaks nits.

Too fixated on hardware specs. Getting software updates in particular security updates in timely fashion is also a huge part of the whole user experience. Many OEMs are bad bad bad at this. They sell you a flashy phone, then they abandon you.

The lack of ongoing support cannot make up the minor advantage in hardware specs. I found that with the Moto G, the t-mobile reception was so bad as to make the phone nearly worthless as an actual phone.

Selfies are not even close in favor of the G5. This is a major factor that you gloss over. Multiple unbiased reviewers Phandroid have called this a win for the G5 because although the S7 scans faster, it scans to the lock screen which is inefficient.

In practice, G5 wins. In practice, the display on the G5 is superior to the S7 in that it actually shows the notifications themselves. I know these are big deals, but they should be at least mentioned.

Who carries a second battery? LG has the slideout, but I still think attaching a spare battery via USB is more convenient and much more durable. Charging via USB is what I do at home, work, and in my vehicle.

I used to carry second and third! They take up a lot less space than a USB charger and take your phone from zero to full-charge instantly without adding any cables or bulk to the device, or subjecting the charging port to the stress of a micro USB connector bent into a pocket in my pants or bag.

USB chargers are great, too—I use them a lot—but are only slightly more convenient than charging from the wall. I would second or third, or fourth the suggestion that a removable battery is critical.

We saw this happen recently with smartphone retailer Blu: It acted quickly to correct a security flaw, whereas a lesser-known budget-phone maker might have never released a fix.

To find the best budget phones, we started by reading the roundups and reviews published on general tech sites such as CNET, The Verge, and Wired. Having zeroed in on potential contenders, we went a level deeper to more technical sites like AnandTech and Ars Technica and enthusiast sites such as Android Central and Android Police.

These product reviews often creep into thousands of words, giving us plenty of information with which to narrow our testing selections. From our research and our years of experience with Android phones, we know that the quality of the screen is very important but varies wildly independent of resolution.

A budget phone today should have at least a decent p screen. Some manufacturers insist on cluttering a phone with obtrusive overlays and crappy preinstalled apps that slow down the device and often look less refined than stock Android.

Overall, the closer to stock Android software a phone gets and the fewer preinstalled apps a phone has, the more likely we are to recommend it. Some companies are better than others at providing such updates, and others barely support their phones at all.

For example, Google and Samsung issue monthly security updates, but Motorola has had problems getting updates out in a timely manner. Other makers are worse. Inside, most budget phones use a midrange system-on-a-chip SoC.

Each phone we recommend is fast enough to handle Android 7. Gaming might bog down some of the slower chips, but RAM is more important in this regard: Some cheaper phones have only 8 GB of storage for apps, photos, music, and everything else—but because that storage also holds the operating system and preloaded apps, you end up with only a few gigabytes free.

This restriction makes a microSD-card slot essential on any phone with 16 GB of storage or less. If a good phone camera is important to you, the options are limited when it comes to budget smartphones.

Even high-end Android phone cameras sometimes struggle, and the further down you go, the worse things get. Some budget-phone cameras do okay outdoors or in bright light, but you should move beyond budget phones if you want a device that can replace your point-and-shoot camera.

As mentioned above, most budget devices are carrier-unlocked, so you can use them on any compatible carrier. Being on a GSM network offers you the most freedom to take advantage of budget phones.

You can sometimes find carrier-locked versions on sale for cheaper if you prefer iOS, but all things being equal our Android picks deliver more value for the money. I have tested more than two dozen budget smartphones since I carried each handset as my only phone for a while—no cheating by grabbing a different phone when things got weird or inconvenient, as they sometimes do with budget phones.

Because these phones are mostly unlocked handsets, I was able to transfer my SIM and rely on the test devices for all my mobile computing needs, everything from messaging to Web browsing to running Android Auto in my car.

When reviewing each phone, I looked for annoyances such as a confusing user experience, interface lag or stuttering, and impractical extra features that get in the way rather than making the phone more convenient and easier to use.

And I noted how the battery held up during each day of testing. The Motorola Moto G5 Plus has better performance, cleaner software, and better build quality than other budget phones. The cheaper version is best for most people because you can add more storage via the microSD-card slot, and 2 GB of RAM is fine for basic tasks.

Many other low-cost phones have heavy UI layers that slow them down and provide custom features that barely work. With Moto Actions, a quick flip gesture can launch the camera, and a chop motion turns the flashlight on and off.

Below the display is a front-facing fingerprint sensor, which is unheard of in this price range. In fact, this sensor is faster, more accurate, and better-placed than the one in the Galaxy S8.

You should be able to make it through two days on a charge with moderate use. When you do run out of juice, the phone supports watt fast charging with the included charger.

And because the battery is removable, you can always swap in a new one when you run low on power. This low price requires some sacrifices. The quad-core Snapdragon processor is fast enough for basic tasks, but gaming or intense multitasking will slow down the Moto E4.

The removable battery is also a big plus, and we like that it works on all carriers. It has an aluminum unibody design, dual camera, and a faster processor. The Alcatel Idol 5S has a sturdy glass-and-aluminum chassis with a fast rear-facing fingerprint sensor.

It has a sturdy aluminum design, but the edges are a bit sharp, making the phone a little uncomfortable to hold. The hardware looks okay on a spec sheet, but in practice the phone lags and drops frames even during light usage.

The 1GB in the Moto G refers to the running memory which is basically how many apps can be running in the background. But their plan looks to be a bit more expensive than Republic Wireless.

I had no issues last night downloading apps and switching among different apps as I opened different ones and configured them. Used it with Play Music playing music from my SD card on a walk this morning and on the drive in this morning with no problems.

Looking at my settings, I have apps like Weatherbug, OneDrive and Evernote running in the background even though I have notifications turned off for all so why? Even more important, my wife is happy too since I got here one as well.

None of the media outlets reported on the multitasking problems the phone had when it came out even though affected nearly every phone and made even playing music from a 3rd party app impossible.

That was fixed fortunately although much delayed in Canada for some inexplicable reason, but all new problems cropped up with recent updates. And the latest actually bricked my and many others phones.

I need a better-than-iphone5 camera and expandable memory. I got the Alcatel Onetouch Idol 3 back in May. The front speakers were a desired extra, as was the FM radio to listen to NPR at my desk in the evening.

I have a Moto G and like it a lot. Why is the moto X play not mentioned anywhere? I have seen other lists where the X play sits on top. Those are all from 3rd parties, and none are fulfilled by Amazon.

I have a Moto G, that I bought to replace my older Nexus 5. Moto has updated it to 6. Compared to my Nexus 5 the battery life is absolutely fantastic. I have never come close to running dry during the day yet.

I can even navigate for short drives in the city without plugging it in. I use the phone for sms, email, lots of web browsing and as a kindle reader. No video watching or gaming.

Performance is fine for my usage style. I do use the camera for snapshots very regularly, and the camera is OK. Better than the Nexus 5, but not close to a current iPhone. Seems to have more trouble when the subject is backlit.

The twist to bring up the camera and shake for the flashlight are very handy. They are real bargains. Both are happy makes me happy! My Moto G has an issue where it will not charge, it appears the port no longer works testing it with multiple cables and chargers yields the same result.

What would you recomend as a replacement? Did you consider contacting Motorola and just letting them know? They might be willing to replace it for you.

And are you turned off of Motorola devices completely now? The Moto E is good, as is the Nexus 5X. Will you be updating this guide with it soon? I have the Alcatel Onetouch Idol 3 and it did get the update to Marshmallow.

They seem to fall short in some important way with each iteration. From my read, the Robin had issues with shutter lag and battery life straight out of the box. Those have either been fixed shutter or improved battery in updates since release.

For me that puts the robin on par with the 5x today. Specs specific, a good argument to be made for Google Fi. The real decider for me was the design. Moto G 4s have major issue with ghost touching when charging.

So hopefully the new frequencies will offer a solution. We can say that none of the phones recommended here gave us trouble when we used them to make calls. One of our writers who also lives somewhere without a great cell signal seconds the recommendation for a cell booster antenna.
