It takes a little while to open, but it works. Many of these could be called gimmicks, but a lot of them are really useful. While it can be a little confusing, the Mate 10 software experience is generally smooth and rewarding.
The number of compatible scenes will grow over time, and the phone reacts remarkably fast, outputting images of generally very good quality. You can always override the AI-predicted scene selection settings if you disagree, but only by going into the manual controls and switching to a preset.
The Mate 10 camera takes very good shots in a simple point-and-shoot scenario, with a little variation. But it must be noted that, to get those grain-free shots, the Mate 10 tends to crush blacks a bit and slightly darken the overall scene in the resulting photograph.
Depending on your tastes, it maintains better image integrity after the fact, but low light photos can be a little less poppy and light than those shot on the Pixel 2 or Note 8 for example.
In contrast to this slight underexposure, bright spots in low-light photos tend to be a little blown out, like in the shot of the river above. Personally, I appreciate the sharper details, and I can always lighten the shadows in post, but your mileage may vary.
Oddly enough, a more familiar result comes when using the hybrid digital zoom. The level of detail achieved is quite remarkable, but the overall image is much lighter than the regular shot with its pitch blacks.
The hybrid zoom definitely produces more detail than a zoomed-in regular photo. A similar level of hit-or-miss occurred with the AI scene selection. The Mate 10 has a tendency to produce very different photos if you shoot a couple in a row.
Normally this could be explained by the AI not recognizing the scene in one of them. In HDR mode, even when focused on the exact same spot, the phone would lighten shadows in some photos, but darken them in others.
The AI Motion Detection function is really impressive. The bokeh mode is also pretty good. While these software modes have improved across the board in the last year, the Mate 10 does an admirable job, lining up well against the Pixel 2, even if that phone manages the effect with dual pixels rather than a dual lens setup.
The software missteps on occasion, but the results are generally more than good enough for a new profile pic or social share. Some of this may be down to the AI scene detection, but as you can see in this photo of a dog yawning, the ISP has tried so hard to sharpen up the details that it ends up looking odd.
This other shot of a dog looks perfectly fine though. You can pick a color profile from standard, vivid or smooth colors. All the usual Huawei camera modes are also there, including monochrome, 3D panorama, light painting, night shot and slo-mo.
Pro mode is also there if you want full control over ISO, white balance, exposure compensation, shutter speed and more. If the cameras on Huawei phones put you off in the past because they seemed too complicated, those days are over.

Usually I would have to charge my previous phones over night to get a full days charge. But this is not the case with the mate 9. I would leave it to charge for about 30 mins and I'm good for the day.
IR Blaster - This is a great feature. In my bedroom I use 6 remotes and sometimes family members tend to use said remotes and misplace them, with the mate 9 I control my cable box, TV, Stereo, Air-condition and more.
So when i get home after a hard day of work I don't get into arguments for the misplaced remotes, I just whip out my phone select which remote I want and just use it.
Performance - Since I got this phone I have no issues with performance, I never experienced any lag, overall performance has been fluid. Like everything else, there is a few cons: The screen can be shrunk to the left or the right for one hand operation.

I love the metal back and the dark color. The screen is huge with very small bezels. I'm used to 2k screens but the on this phone looks so crisp I barely notice the difference.
The software seems pretty well optimized. I was able to switch launchers easily. I had some issues with their backup software so I just manually did everything through google.
Very little lag and everything opens immediately.

Very little lag and everything opens immediately. The camera is very fun to use and has a lot of features to play with. The battery life is great compared to my old phone. I play Clash Royale and check it frequently for texting and social media and snapchat and I can easily get through the day without having to charge it.
There is very little drain while the phone is idle also, which is nice. As long as you don't leave a ton of apps open constantly. They have a function that alerts you to background processes using up heavy battery, but it can get a little frustrating with Facebook and Spotify.
Those two apps will constantly restart themselves in the background to refresh info, so I'd say once every hour or so I get a warning alerting me to close background apps that aren't physically running on the phone.
The app itself is killed there is just a process running. Would be nice to be able to permanently lock the Facebook app from reopening itself, but I don't so much blame the phone for that as I do Facebook developers.
Performance is still great. With past phones they tend to heat up when using games, even right out of the box, but the Mate can handle everything I threw at it with no lag.
No problems across the board. I noticed the notifications do not appear on your lock screen by default, like not even an icon saying you have a notification.
You have to go into each app in the settings individually and select which appear on the lock screen. Otherwise without unlocking it you have no way of knowing you have a message besides the LED.
So it can be fixed you just have to take the time to do it. Speaking of unlocking the phone the fingerprint reader is phenomenal. I've never used a backside reader before so I figured it would be weird getting used to, but this fingerprint reader is so quick it to me no time at all to adjust.
You don't have to click to turn the screen on at all you just tap your finger on the reader quick with the screen completely black and it will unlock to your home screen instantly. Also there is feature that you can swipe on the reader to scroll through pictures or to bring down the settings screen which I think is pretty cool.
Finally you can double click the volume down button to instantly take a picture from the lock screen. Again this happens almost immediately, it's one of my favorite features so far.
I changed my rating to 5 stars for now because I do love the time I've spent with the phone. I'll probably update again after about a month, and definitely after they push the Alexa update that is supposed to be coming.

Huawei's software interface has been overhauled. EMUI 5 is based on Android 7. EMUI 5 also has an app drawer by default. So far, I've always considered Huawei's software to be its biggest hurdle.
Non-removable features, ominous optimization tools and Apple's patented surface elements plague it. My favorite Huawei is the Nexus 6P because its software came directly from Google and not from Huawei.
Notifications were punctual, background services stopped only when I told them to, and the software was generally reliable. A software feature introduced already by Nova, is the App Twin function.
With it, you can install Facebook or WhatsApp twice. The latter is particularly useful is you have the dual-SIM version the Mate 9, so you can use WhatsApp with both of you cell phone numbers.
Instead of having two of the same app, you can also set up a second Android user profile on this device. Huawei intends to substantially improve gaming performance in the Mate 9.
By upgrading the processor, internal memory, and a having supposedly non-aging file system, they hope to have found the secret to having short load time for the life of the phone. The rest of the SoC has been more than just a bit improved.
The Kirin is a new development. That's a total of eight cores. The Vulkan engine contributes to improved graphics performance by using hardware resources more efficiently than the previously established OpenGL ES 3.
Another Huawei Mate 9 speed boost comes from outside the processor. The internal memory is from Samsung UFS 2. Samsung has been using this since the Galaxy S6 and it ensures shorter loading and boot times with the Mate 9 as well.
The result is a noticeable difference during everyday use: Subjectively, the Huawei Mate 9 seems twice as fast as my previous daily use phone, the Nexus 6P. This is confirmed by the data given by the PCMark benchmark test, which simulates daily use.
The big promise of the Huawei Mate 9 is the non-aging file system. With the Mate 9, this problem should disappear. The reception of the Huawei Mate 9 is also remarkable.
The Mate 9 comes with a simple plastic headset, decent for occasional hands-free calls. The speakers on the phone itself, on the other hand, are cleverly conceived. Much like the HTC 10, they switch to stereo mode when you hold the phone in landscape format.
This is useful for watching videos on YouTube with relatively good audio. When in landscape mode, the ear speaker plays one of the stereo channels, and the bottom speaker plays the other.
In portrait mode, the top speaker plays treble, while the bottom speaker plays the lower notes bass is still non-existent. The dual-lens camera, naturally, comes from Leica.
Huawei has improved the camera from its first Leica smartphone camera, the P9, in particular for its low-light performance and sharpness. The overall approach is very interesting. Huawei used our collective knowledge of the anatomy of the human eye to improve its camera system.
Our retinas have an average of about million contrast-seeing rods but only 6 to 7 million color-seeing cones. The Mate 9 camera imitates this and has a 20 MP sensor for the black and white profile of the image instead of 12 MP.
The color camera still works with 12 MP. With a bit of patience and practice, though, you can use the focus effect to create unique images with the Mate 9. For video, you can record in up to 4K, but facial tracking and stabilization are lost.
Only the Google Pixel is capable of digitally stabilizing videos in 4K. The camera software on the Mate 9 is a natural improvement given the Leica-inspired surface introduced by the P9. It offers an easy-to-use Pro mode with extensive manual exposure control.
Another special feature of the camera is how quickly it opens. If you press the volume down button twice, while the Mate 9 is on standby, the phone will wake up and take a photo in less than one second.
However, since the result is usually blurry and incorrectly exposed, you can just switch off this option in the settings. If you are using only one SIM card, you will get almost two days of battery life with regular use and adaptive brightness.
In the detailed test, the Mate 9 can only last for two days in single SIM mode. As we launched a second SIM card, the Mate 9 delivered an average-to-good result: The already big battery life of the Mate 8 was extended from 38 hours to around 43 hours for the Mate 9.
So, Huawei has introduced the SuperCharge charger with the Mate 9. In the test, Supercharge works twice as fast as conventional quick charging via Type-C and charges the Mate 9 completely within minutes.
The dedicated charger works with less power at first and with more power later. As a result, both the battery and the charger stay cooler. This not only increases the efficiency of the charging process to 98 percent but it also extends the lifetime of the components.
If the Galaxy Note 7 was still on the market, Samsung would be facing significant competition. Samsung was king for a long time but now they are just another manufacturer. How can something be too big if you buy this phone knowing how big it is!!
As an ex Note 7 owner I can tell you that it's only a fraction bigger but feels very similar in the hand. In return you get even more screen. I am very impressed with my Mate 9.
It's an excellent replacement until the Note 8 debuts this year. More like less battery life in a 6 inch phone with a QHD display would be a dealbreaker.
You have to see it before you can say this. The screen is excellent and sitting it next to my Galaxy S7 edge made me realise that QHD isn't so amazing after-all.
