What little bloatware there is, is easily removed. Though, I actually liked some of the apps and kept them. I got this tablet for a 4 and 5 year old and it's pretty perfect as far as size goes. It's not so big that it's awkward for them to hold and it's light enough that it doesn't add any significant weight to their backpacks.

I find the kid's mode to be too restrictive. I don't think a single page of apps is ever going to cut it for game hungry kids. Also, I'd have preferred a scheduler where kids were locked during certain times of the day over the timer.

The easy mode was much better, although I ultimately had to abandon it as an option. I disliked that it removed the ability to have wallpapers and there was no way to "lock" the screen so you couldn't add any apps accidentally.

That said, it was painless to install another launcher I liked and it integrated nicely with the tablet with no fuss or glitches so that's plus. The wifi has been strong and consistent thus far.

Streaming from google music and youtube has been seamless and without issue. The speakers are surprisingly good for a tablet this cheap. Obviously not the best quality, but there's none of that tinny hollow sound that I've come to expect from budget tablets.

Speakers are typically where the skimping happens. The battery life is low coming in at thereabout 6 hours of consistent on and off usage, but for the price I'm not going to complain about that.

The is clear enough, but HD it is not. If you're used to very high resolution screens, you're going to notice the difference. I don't think the resolution is offensive, though. We're not talking any extreme pixelation issues.

I have been using mine for nearly a week. I have a Surface RT which is bigger heavier more responsive and has longer battery life. I am happy with the Pendo. It does not have GPS or Bluetooth. I get about 4 hours battery life which I think is at the very low end of acceptable.

I had no trouble getting apps from GPS and only a little fiddling to get my Epson wifi printer to print a document. Probably because I am not Android savvy yet. By comparison the Surface RT was ready to print with no action from me within 5 minutes of my first power on.

Most of that was because I installed Adobe reader first. The one annoying thing for me is the position of the power button. I find myself pressing it by accident.

Perhaps I will get used to avoiding it. I have a question about the clock. If I turn wifi off the clock stops at the time it was when I switched off the tablet and when I switch it on it just resumes from that time.

Just like an old wall clock running from the mains after a blackout. If I enable wifi AND the setting to update the clock from the network it will pickup the correct time a few seconds after switch on.

Is that the correct expected behaviour? Or is my tablet faulty and the clock should keep time even when powered off. Playing any games with anything more than the most simplest of graphics eg Simpsons Tapped Out, reading articles or watching video files is almost intolerable really because being a hand held device its almost impossible to look at it totally on centre.

Touchscreen did not work for a long time!!!! In short the instructions from CrazyV8 at http: I did have trouble getting the touchscreen working but just had to reflash twice and run the touchscreen bat file twice.

Been searching the net but cannot find anything anything as this tablet does not have volume buttons. It's only got a power button on top and a reset button need a pin to press it on the rear.

To enter recovery, power on the tablet and as soon as you see the Pendo splash screen appear basically the second the back light comes on, spam the power button over and over again and you should see white text appear on the screen which will say:.

Quick click the power button to move the cursor, long press it to select the option. Once in recovery mode tap the power button to make the menu appear and it says "Two fingers click the bottom of the screen to move; Two fingers click the top to select" personally I've found I need to quickly tap three fingers the same way you would if you were bored and waiting.

For what its worth, my menu was in chinese the first time and I used google translate on my phone to find 'clear flash' to do a factory reset. Interestingly enough I tried again after the reboot and it was in english.

Pendo say that internet has to be on for the location service to work. I'm thinking that it doesn't actually have a GPS Run it and see if there's any activity. You should see it detecting satellites after a minute or two.

It tolerates having a lot of windows open well. What little bloatware there is, is easily removed. Though, I actually liked some of the apps and kept them. I got this tablet for a 4 and 5 year old and it's pretty perfect as far as size goes.

It's not so big that it's awkward for them to hold and it's light enough that it doesn't add any significant weight to their backpacks. I find the kid's mode to be too restrictive.

I don't think a single page of apps is ever going to cut it for game hungry kids. Also, I'd have preferred a scheduler where kids were locked during certain times of the day over the timer. The easy mode was much better, although I ultimately had to abandon it as an option.

I disliked that it removed the ability to have wallpapers and there was no way to "lock" the screen so you couldn't add any apps accidentally. That said, it was painless to install another launcher I liked and it integrated nicely with the tablet with no fuss or glitches so that's plus.

The wifi has been strong and consistent thus far. Streaming from google music and youtube has been seamless and without issue. The speakers are surprisingly good for a tablet this cheap.

Obviously not the best quality, but there's none of that tinny hollow sound that I've come to expect from budget tablets. Speakers are typically where the skimping happens. The battery life is low coming in at thereabout 6 hours of consistent on and off usage, but for the price I'm not going to complain about that.

I don't understand why this tablet is soooooooo slow. Actions take forever and it has a horrible lag between touching the screen and things actually happening. Avoid this tablet at all costs.

Again I bought it as an interim tablet until I figure out a better one to get but if you are looking at this for long term use, look elsewhere and spend the money.

Not sure what happened but this Asus product is a dud. After trying to make this work and hearing from Asus to do some specific updates I stand by my original review. This is the worst tablet I have ever used.

Cheap processor almost no RAM - no clue what Asus was thinking. It is painfully unusable. If I click the keyboard to type something I have to wait almost 5 seconds for it to even appear on screen.

What a great little tablet. I messed around with a Kindle Fire before buying this and wish I would have started here. This was a replacement for the previous version of this tablet that my now 6 year old has.

The last one lasted through 2 years of very rough use and it was used nearly everyday. The latest edition has a crisp display, quick processor and is packaged in a nifty size.

Video plays smoothly, games load in a fair amount of time and nothing seems like a cheap tablet or you giving up too much buying something on a budget. This isn't a top of the line machine so don't treat it that way.

Like I said this is for my 6 year old, He needs Google Play store and a battery that lasts for a good period of time. This has all that and more. I was impressed with ASUS quality with the last tablets we had.

One other one is still going. I did't go through the steps to add the Play Store to the Fire but then those apps wouldn't add to the kids mode. Comment 4 people found this helpful.

Bought this to replace my Nexus 7 tablet, but the only thing they have in common is that they are 7inch tablets built by Asus. The screen is basic - fine for reading a book, but I feel like I'm missing details in photos.

The battery life is not great - though Asus have a power management utility that helps keep it going for about a week per charge. This tablet is not for gaming, but if you have basic usage you'll be just fine.

There are not a lot of great options in the 7 or 8 inch Android tablet space the Google Nexus 7 really set the bar high and it doesn't seem to be a market that manufacturers are going for anymore.

Comment 5 people found this helpful. So far the difference between this tablet and the five others I returned for being damage or not working is tremendous. Right off the bat I noticed a huge difference in speed and just the feel of it was sturdier than the others.

Downloads and loads pages so much faster. The volume is 3 or 4 times higher and the movies stream without any skips or reloading. I bought the other five at or around dollars trying to find a decent tablet for my girls and let me tell you they are garbage.

Spend the 10 or 20 extra bucks and get something that will last more than a couple of hours. I usually wait to review until it's had a chance to let me down but this one is pretty impressive for the money.

But with pendo's track record when speaking to them you can clearly tell the products shipped software is garbage and they are only supporting hardware as a result. I am on my second one as it kept freezing up for no reason. The new one does the same so I would be interested in a better firmware on this also. This kind of device can be handy for a particular task, eg running Unified Remote and using it on;y as a remote control device.

Or dedicated to something like Spotify or Rdio, connected to your hifi. Or with a UPnP system as a playback controller. Used like that you won't be asking too much of it. Daughter has upgraded to a galaxy tab 2 10 and she is loving it and im loving the fact that the battery life can last up to 5 movies and then some.

The digitizer on mine cracked-was able to remove the part which has it myself a bit tricky prying it off. Reading the lines through the batch file, it found the device when it starts the ADB Daemon.

I heard that the model they were selling before didn't have the 'official' Google play and users had to root it somehow. Yup, play store al good, downloaded a couple of things on it.

Apps that use the GPS for location may be setup on the Play Store to no be compatible with devices that do not have a GPS even though the location part is only for a small piece of functionality that is not essential.

Out of stock at my busy local Coles so had to drive a couple of suburbs away to a less frequented one. The screen's a bit reflective so it looked quite disappointing outdoors.

Much better indoors although viewing angles aren't too good and the touch screen is plastic I believe. Auto brightness isn't supported. It definitely feels cheaper but is substantially lighter than my 2nd gen Nexus 7.

It scores about 3, in Quadrant compared to about 5, for the N7. It scores slightly higher in the 2D and 3D tests than the Nexus though so games should run well enough. Rendering complex web pages in Chrome ocassionally causes some stuttering and scrolling isn't as smooth as on the N7 but for my usage it's good enough.

It runs a fairly stock version of Kitkat with a bit more than 4GB of internal storage available. The microsd slot makes loading media on it quite easy and the included 4K media player is decent from what I've seen so far.

Video doesn't stutter although the onboard speaker won't be loud enough for most. A cable and charger are also included. I use my 1yo pendo for watching movies from a usb-drive on my big TV via HDMI-out port, it's great being able to have it on mains power for this It charges via the USB port as well so as shipped, I don't think it'll work.

Not sure if it'll work though or if doing so will also charge the tablet. Or maybe a Y-cable of some sort? Haven't tried it on the new one yet though. And the build quality of the original is markedly better than this new one which was a bit dissapointing at first.

The higher resolution display and speed make up for it though. I just find them easier to use than microSD cards as my PC has no slot for small cards and they're thus fiddly. I believe it has the " WiFi Display " feature that can couple to miracast adaptor to mirror screen image wirelessly to big TV for your movies or videos etc.

Click setting, then display, you will see wifi display. System utilities state that the maximum CPU speed is Mhz probably based on the chipset used but the actual maximum the tablet ever runs at is Mhz.

There is a lot of functionality for the money. And no I am not a Pendo rep. Just wish I had bought two. It's no good to be greedy what with Android stuff moving ahead in leaps and bounds. Runs Android Jelly Bean which is what Seems to me that is better value than the full-priced Pendo pad 7" running 4.

But the adapter is potentially a problem. You need a certain variety of Slimport adapter not MHL, and it would pay to do very careful research before buying one online.

Also for the Nexus you'd need some kind of micro-USB hub to enable plugging other stuff in at the same time. Hopefully a keyboard would work via the Bluetooth.

The battery life on the Nexus is 8 hours, so that is more than double what I get from the Pendo Pad. Anyway, good to know that you can get decent battery life when using a 3G modem.

On my typical WIFI connection with two bars of signal strength in our bedroom, I get about 2 hours of screen time browsing web pages. Watching p videos lasts from 2.

I get at least double those times on a Nexus 7 which is heavier and most likely has a much larger battery and is also more efficient at throttling down the CPU to 1, or mhz when not needed. I just note how long my usage session was and then power off.

I don't have one of them so I can't comment on it, but it looks fine for a young child to play with. As people have mentioned before, it has Google play store. The tablet updated a couple of apps from Google automatically when I signed in to Google.

The screen seems to be a bit grainier than my lovely huawei 7" lite but it seems to be a bit brighter. I have not noticed any huge difference in speed single core on the huawei with less ram compared to quad core with large ram, but have only been using it for a few hours.

I think the screen protector that it has out of the box might be the reason for the grainy screen. It is quite sturdy but I don't know how careless children can be… I will see about battery life before I decide whether I will keep the pendo or sell it on.

Pendo support were great, very responsive and helpful. Thought I'd report back on my experiences with the Pendo pad. So far I've given them a bit of a workout! I found that they would get between hours of battery life with this sort of usage.

I've also installed the latest XBMC 13 "Gotham" release on the pads — given that my plan is to put them in the car instead of using portable DVD players on holiday trips. I'm extremely impressed with this, I was not expecting it to be able to cope with higher demand files particularly when it's having to output the DTS-HD as stereo, but it has done it perfectly.

I plan on making this the main tablet for my kids so that I can get my Nexus 7 back from time to time! I've just unboxed the unit and fired it up, and the first thing I've noticed is a distortion on the screen while I hold it, with my fingers pressing lightly on the back.

I'd hazard a guess that it's the backlight causing this. It happens at one particular area: Is this to be expected from a Pendo Pad, or have I got a dodgy unit? Mine requires firmly pressing the back to cause the ripples — although my "firmly" could be the same as what you call "lightly".

The second tablet also has a rippling effect that is evident on the screen left of centre, running up and down that appears with slight pressure on the back. My local Coles had sold out of the quad core PendoPads so I headed to a Coles in a neighbouring suburb.

The tablet was changed over without a problem. The new unit is better than the previous ones regarding the rippling effect from the backlight, affecting a smaller area and needing greater pressure to show.

I was happy to walk away with what I had but not before I asked if I could check one more tablet, which they declined: The tablet has now been set up and personalised with various apps. The kids are happy, as am I.

I was having the same issue, I returned it for a replacement and am now getting more like 4 hours. Hey back on page four it was said that this unit has no bluetooth. I ask because I see other similar Pendo tablets bundled with bluetooth headsets That is correct, no bluetooth on the tablet.

If you read the article really carefully, you will find You can connect the headset to a compatible phone that supports Bluetooth wireless technology. All set up with kidoz launcher and some good kid apps.

Looking for a cover, I tried a Kmart supposedly universal cover but it didn't fit with the volume and power keys. In the end I found that a Belkin flip cover for the galaxy tab 3 7" fitted perfectly.

Was on special at DSE with buy one get one free so all good. Even after rooting it, that thing was slow. Not enough ram, Also the 4GB internal storage wasn't enough cant move everything to sd card.

Does that extra ram make a big improvment to the 'snappiness' of the tablet? I have a Nexus 7 and one of my sons has an iPad Mini. They are both excellent pieces of kit.

We made different choices simply because the Nexus is better value for me and he's a fanbois, but we're both delighted with what we have and they perform their limited pad functions very well. Of course, neither even faintly compares with my desktop, running Debian sid.

I think you're on the right track — large pads are clumsy and smaller ones are not much better than a good 5" phone and a pair of cheap reading glasses e. I use my Nexus 7 for little more than storing music to play on my Sonos and Bluetooth speakers.

I have been using mine for nearly a week. I have a Surface RT which is bigger heavier more responsive and has longer battery life. I am happy with the Pendo. It does not have GPS or Bluetooth.

I get about 4 hours battery life which I think is at the very low end of acceptable. I had no trouble getting apps from GPS and only a little fiddling to get my Epson wifi printer to print a document.

Probably because I am not Android savvy yet. By comparison the Surface RT was ready to print with no action from me within 5 minutes of my first power on.

Most of that was because I installed Adobe reader first. The one annoying thing for me is the position of the power button. I find myself pressing it by accident. Perhaps I will get used to avoiding it.

I didnt do my system backup before trying the FaaastJB v2. I have tried heaps of different TS drivers but cannot get anything working at all. External mouse works perfectly.
