Apps, accounts and settings are sandboxed in each profile, so the secret one almost acts as a completely separate phone. Notice how the Samsung picks up the reflection of the blue sky in the hood of this Porsche and brings out the burgundy of the car parked to the left. And while earlier Huawei phones have had some problems with visibility in the sunlight, the Mate 9 appears to be better but not perfect with that regard. The Mate 10 Pro achieved a multicore Geekbench 4 score of 6, edging out the Pixel 2, at 6, and Note 8, at 6, My free time is filled with a lot of sports, in the summer mainly on my bike. Strangely, I have enjoyed using it a little more than I should! Overall sort by value.

25.01.2018 - Seems overpriced for the feature set and hassles of acquisition. I simply loved the rendering of the simulated bokeh effect from the Huawei P9, and I am expecting the Mate 9 Pro to be able to produce similar quality output. The design, however, is nearly the same as the design of its predecessor, the Mate 8. Care of use is needed. The first time we tested the Mate 10 Pro back in the fall, its 4,mAH battery delivered 14 hours and 33 minutes of web surfing on T-Mobile's LTE network, which was good enough to beat the Note 8 by more than 3 hours. On the Huawei's Normal color profile, hues are a bit brighter and cooler than in the Note 8's Basic mode, but those shades lack the same deep color range.

06.02.2018 - Apps, accounts and settings are sandboxed in each profile, so the secret one almost acts as a completely separate phone. I have a P9 which I bought when I broke my previous phone, at least in part based on your review. JPEG quality is excellent, both in maintaining high level of fine details, overall sharp look and true to life color reproduction. Shutter lag refers to the delay between the press of shutter button to the actual capturing of image, as the phone receives a signal from your tap to shoot, the phone then needs to process the signal and directs the camera to take a photo. That's a welcome addition, especially considering the size of the Mate 10 Pro's battery — though, again, we would have liked to see Huawei make the most of that glass back by supporting wireless charging. Specifically - and especially in T-Mobile's case - buyers are going to be increasingly aware of whether a phone has the requisite hardware and software to support extended range 1GB LTE.

So far, I've always considered Huawei's software to be its biggest hurdle. Non-removable features, ominous optimization tools and Apple's patented surface elements plague it.
My favorite Huawei is the Nexus 6P because its software came directly from Google and not from Huawei. Notifications were punctual, background services stopped only when I told them to, and the software was generally reliable.
A software feature introduced already by Nova, is the App Twin function. With it, you can install Facebook or WhatsApp twice. The latter is particularly useful is you have the dual-SIM version the Mate 9, so you can use WhatsApp with both of you cell phone numbers.
Instead of having two of the same app, you can also set up a second Android user profile on this device. Huawei intends to substantially improve gaming performance in the Mate 9.
By upgrading the processor, internal memory, and a having supposedly non-aging file system, they hope to have found the secret to having short load time for the life of the phone. The rest of the SoC has been more than just a bit improved.
The Kirin is a new development. That's a total of eight cores. The Vulkan engine contributes to improved graphics performance by using hardware resources more efficiently than the previously established OpenGL ES 3.
Another Huawei Mate 9 speed boost comes from outside the processor. The internal memory is from Samsung UFS 2. Samsung has been using this since the Galaxy S6 and it ensures shorter loading and boot times with the Mate 9 as well.
The result is a noticeable difference during everyday use: Subjectively, the Huawei Mate 9 seems twice as fast as my previous daily use phone, the Nexus 6P. This is confirmed by the data given by the PCMark benchmark test, which simulates daily use.
The big promise of the Huawei Mate 9 is the non-aging file system. With the Mate 9, this problem should disappear. The reception of the Huawei Mate 9 is also remarkable.
The Mate 9 comes with a simple plastic headset, decent for occasional hands-free calls. The speakers on the phone itself, on the other hand, are cleverly conceived. Much like the HTC 10, they switch to stereo mode when you hold the phone in landscape format.
This is useful for watching videos on YouTube with relatively good audio. When in landscape mode, the ear speaker plays one of the stereo channels, and the bottom speaker plays the other.
In portrait mode, the top speaker plays treble, while the bottom speaker plays the lower notes bass is still non-existent. The dual-lens camera, naturally, comes from Leica. Huawei has improved the camera from its first Leica smartphone camera, the P9, in particular for its low-light performance and sharpness.
The overall approach is very interesting. Huawei used our collective knowledge of the anatomy of the human eye to improve its camera system. Our retinas have an average of about million contrast-seeing rods but only 6 to 7 million color-seeing cones.
The Mate 9 camera imitates this and has a 20 MP sensor for the black and white profile of the image instead of 12 MP. The color camera still works with 12 MP. With a bit of patience and practice, though, you can use the focus effect to create unique images with the Mate 9.
For video, you can record in up to 4K, but facial tracking and stabilization are lost. Only the Google Pixel is capable of digitally stabilizing videos in 4K.
The camera software on the Mate 9 is a natural improvement given the Leica-inspired surface introduced by the P9. It offers an easy-to-use Pro mode with extensive manual exposure control.
Another special feature of the camera is how quickly it opens. If you press the volume down button twice, while the Mate 9 is on standby, the phone will wake up and take a photo in less than one second.
However, since the result is usually blurry and incorrectly exposed, you can just switch off this option in the settings. If you are using only one SIM card, you will get almost two days of battery life with regular use and adaptive brightness.
In the detailed test, the Mate 9 can only last for two days in single SIM mode. As we launched a second SIM card, the Mate 9 delivered an average-to-good result: The already big battery life of the Mate 8 was extended from 38 hours to around 43 hours for the Mate 9.
So, Huawei has introduced the SuperCharge charger with the Mate 9. In the test, Supercharge works twice as fast as conventional quick charging via Type-C and charges the Mate 9 completely within minutes.
The dedicated charger works with less power at first and with more power later. As a result, both the battery and the charger stay cooler. This not only increases the efficiency of the charging process to 98 percent but it also extends the lifetime of the components.
If the Galaxy Note 7 was still on the market, Samsung would be facing significant competition. Samsung was king for a long time but now they are just another manufacturer. How can something be too big if you buy this phone knowing how big it is!!
As an ex Note 7 owner I can tell you that it's only a fraction bigger but feels very similar in the hand. In return you get even more screen. I am very impressed with my Mate 9.
It's an excellent replacement until the Note 8 debuts this year. More like less battery life in a 6 inch phone with a QHD display would be a dealbreaker. You have to see it before you can say this.
The screen is excellent and sitting it next to my Galaxy S7 edge made me realise that QHD isn't so amazing after-all. I was sceptical too but after owning this phone for 4 weeks now I can honestly say the screen does not disappoint in any way.
Only someone who's never used it could ever say that. Coming from an amoled QHD at 5. It's proof that QHD on mobile phones is overkill. Am having huawei Android phone but video calls doesn't activate since invited over 20 people to join and yet no progress to see whatsapp video calls.
And it seems false information about whatsapp video. And BTW, this phone is even in the same league as the note 7. This is no Infinity Display, though, so you don't get the same illusion of depth.
Along the bottom edge, you'll find a USB-C port next to one of two stereo speakers the other doubles as the earpiece up top, and an IR blaster on the opposite side. Most devices don't feature IR blasters anymore, so the Mate 10 Pro is one of your only options if you want your next smartphone to double as a TV remote.
Still, we would have preferred a 3. Huawei has traded the Mate 9's brushed-metal back for glass, though not for the reason you might think. When Apple moved to glass for the iPhone 8 and iPhone X, the goal was to add wireless-charging support.
Huawei has made a similar change, though wireless charging is nowhere to be found on this phone. As a result, the Mate 10 Pro feels a bit less premium than it should, considering the price this phone will likely command.
Around the back, you'll still find centrally mounted, Leica-branded dual cameras. This time, they're set in a reflective band that encompasses the entire module, including the flash and sensors. It's a distinctive bit of flair that really lifts an otherwise-stoic aesthetic.
The Mate 10 Pro comes in three colors. Our unit was clad in Titanium Gray, though we've seen the Midnight Blue and Mocha Brown versions and can confirm the device looks classiest and most eye-catching in its cafe-inspired guise.
Just like the iPhone 8 and Google's Pixel 2 , the Mate 10 Pro benefits from IP67 water and dust resistance, protecting the handset for 30 minutes in up to 3. This display is a step up from the 5.
The significantly lower resolution of the Mate 10 Pro's screen means UI elements and text look more jagged and pixelated upon closer inspection. On the Huawei's Normal color profile, hues are a bit brighter and cooler than in the Note 8's Basic mode, but those shades lack the same deep color range.
Viewing angles are a tad worse as well, with a slightly more-pronounced blue cast as you tilt the handset from side to side. Still, this is a solid display, even if it isn't necessarily the best one available.
The Mate 10 Pro registered a peak full-screen brightness of nits, which is slightly above the nit average for smartphones. The display covered The Note 8 fared a bit better, with results of Color-accuracy scores closer to 0 are better.
Users who prefer more-saturated tones will appreciate the Mate's optional Vivid setting, which dials up the intensity and produces an even-cooler tint. The Mate 10 Pro's dual cameras represent a series of firsts for Huawei.
Also impressive, the Mate 10 Pro is Huawei's first smartphone to launch with a dedicated chip for handling artificial intelligence, called the neural network processing unit NPU.
The phone's cameras leverage this unique resource through object recognition by tuning exposure parameters when they identify certain things. There are 13 identifiable scenarios in total, including faces, flowers, plants, food, dogs and cats, and Huawei says it will add more if necessary in future updates.
I focused the camera on a document, and the app responded by presenting a little "T" icon below the viewfinder, signifying that the camera was in text mode and had recognized what it was seeing.
The phone then sharpened the image, slightly boosted the contrast, and opted for a cooler white balance to improve clarity and help separate the print from the paper. And we haven't even touched on the sheer number of camera features offered in this phone: Portrait mode, true black-and-white photography and a 2.
The Mate 10 Pro's cameras are about as complete as any you'll find on competing flagships, and in our testing, they proved just as capable. We pitted the Mate 10 Pro against the Galaxy Note 8 and that phone's dual-rear cameras.
In this first photo comparison, the Note 8 breaks out to a strong start, capturing the vivid tapestry of crimson, gold and green in this lush fall scene. Huawei's phone, on the other hand, delivers a sharper but ultimately more muted representation.
Yet the Note 8 wouldn't hold the lead for long. The following images demonstrate how both phones handle portraits, with the Mate 10 Pro benefitting from the aforementioned AI processing core.
While it was difficult to quantify precisely how the NPU aided this exposure you can't turn object recognition off, the Huawei consistently outperformed the Samsung in Portrait Mode. The Mate 10 Pro's more-aggressive bokeh evokes a more-profound sensation of depth, helping the model burst from the background.
The Note 8's attempt is certainly brighter overall but a bit blurrier to my eye, with unrealistic, overpronounced highlights in the subject's skin tone and hair. You will notice some strange artifacting in both shots in specific areas around the model's head, as neither phone perfectly scaled back the blur effect along the boundaries of the foreground.
Moving back indoors for a low-light test, the Note 8 claimed the brighter scene overall, despite the Huawei's much-vaunted aperture advantage. However, the reddish tone of the wooden wall in the background isn't quite true-to-life.
And again, if we zoom in, the Note 8 doesn't preserve the same level of detail as the Mate 10 Pro. An ideal photo would mix aspects of both exposures. There's definitely a pattern here, as the Mate 10 Pro favors sharper but darker exposures, whereas the Note 8 has a tendency to produce punchier colors.
Notice how the Samsung picks up the reflection of the blue sky in the hood of this Porsche and brings out the burgundy of the car parked to the left. The Huawei falters in capturing those hues, though it nails the finer details, like the texture of the asphalt.
Our last trial, a selfie of yours truly, shows that the 8-MP front shooters on both phones mostly emulate what we observed from the rear cameras. The Mate 10 Pro displays brighter highlights and darker shadows, while the Note 8 delivers more-robust color universally, at the expense of contrast.
And just as before, sharpness remains a part of the story. Notice the differences in my hair and the texture of the canvas on my backpack. The Huawei also lends a subtle blur effect to the trees in the background, a result I prefer.
Unlike the majority of Android flagships powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon chipsets, the Mate 10 Pro employs Huawei's own Kirin silicon. But in typical usage, you'd never know there was any difference; the device performs just as flawlessly as the best phones we've tested this year.
The Mate 10 Pro achieved a multicore Geekbench 4 score of 6,, edging out the Pixel 2, at 6,, and Note 8, at 6, However, Huawei was slightly off the mark in the Ice Storm Unlimited 3D graphics test, in which the device notched a result of 31, The Note 8 achieved 39, Still, the 6GB of RAM in our Mate 10 Pro kept things humming at a reasonable clip, and we didn't encounter any lag when switching between apps, using multiwindow mode or snapping photos all day.
The phone does get quite warm when charging, however — something to keep in mind as you put the handset through its paces. For a real-world test, we had the Mate 10 Pro transcode a 4K video file into p using the InShot app, then compared its time against the Galaxy Note 8.

Huawei Mate 9 review. Huawei’s Mate 9 smartphone has been available since last we look ahead to whether the phone can rival the Google Pixel XL and iPhone. Huawei Mate 10 Pro review HUAWEI'S MATE 10 is the most recent flagship big-screen that's good enough to truly rely on for grabbing a quick, but. Huawei Mate 9 Review Let's take a look, but do note that Huawei's Mate 9 is to be available across a Quick-start guide; Design Huawei shows us that a big.
You may want to revisit this again. And in low light, the Mate 9 actually produced better detail in 2x zoom than did the iPhone 7 Plus with its 2x optical zoom! I attribute this to the 7 Plus' smaller sensor used in the 2x zoom mode, as well as not having access to manual controls for ISO and shutter speed I did not test with a 3rd party camera app.
In daylight conditions, the iPhone's zoom was clearly superior. Again, all shots were taken on a tripod, but Apple seems to prioritize getting a clear shot over attempting to preserve detail.
Maybe a software update will change it, but taking a standard photo followed by an HDR photo produced almost no difference. The Pixel XL was the best phone for capture detail in most conditions.
But in lower light, I can actually preserve more fine detail with the Mate 9 or LG V20, even with handheld shots, by using manual control. I noticed that the Mate 9 would pull more shadow detail in daylight shots than the Pixel or V20 though.
The Pixel XL would noticeably boost color, but also seemed to grab some colors better that the Mate 9 totally missed at times. The image appears darker in the viewfinder than the actual produced photo will be, due to the pixel binning from the 20 MP sensor capturing more light.
For point and shoot photography on a smartphone, you can't beat the Pixel. I highly recommend you get your hands on one to check it out. With that said, I would probably prefer to have another phone when taking manual photos.
The Pixel can work with manual camera apps, but those always seem lackluster in function and in quality compared to the native camera app when it offers manual control. For my needs, it works quite well.
I actually bought and returned an RX IV because, although I enjoy taking artistic photos and using manual control, I couldn't justify the cost compared to what my smartphone could do.
My phone actually produced much better dynamic range and more pleasing JPEGs so long as it was not in very low light. I know the RX is far, far more capable.
But for me, today's smartphones work incredibly well if you learn to use them properly Jared Polin's videos on YouTube come to mind where he shows just how capable smartphone cameras are.
Hi Robin, I've just been reading different articles about smartphone's cameras and came across with your review, it's really accurate and the samples are just amazing, congratulations for your work!
However, I'd like to know if the auto mode of the P9 or Mate 9 is as good as the iPhone's, G5's or Galaxy S7's, for example, taking random pictures on casual situations, no matter the light conditions.
I couldn't find any other trusted review with a photographer's perspective as this one using another smartphone. Hi, perhaps I can offer my opinion as the owner of a Mate 9 Pro for one month now.
I usually leave the phone in Wide Aperture mode to play around with focus and bokeh later with smooth colour setting, which is as auto as it gets. Day-time images are equal to iphone my wife has iphone 7 so we compare pics all the time and Samsung.
But that's before I start fiddling with the image. Once you consider adjusting bokeh, focus point, and other image processing features that come with the phone it's no contest. For low-light settings, i can't speak for the Samsung but the Mate 9 pro blows the apple away.
To the extent that my wife is a little pissed at Apple haha. I'm not a professional photographer, but I do work in advertising and have a lot of experience with layouts, and I have to say that my Art Director friends are all pretty impressed with the camera on this phone.
Hope this helps a little. Thank you for a very nice and informative blog about my new favorite mobile: I'll followed you for some time with your Olympus photography, nice "meeting" you again with the Mate 9 Pro: Keep this blog's coming!
Thank you for the review! I think I will pick up the Mate for myself tomorrow! I was getting tired of hearing techies who have never held a DSLR in their life reviewing smartphone cameras Pet peeve of mine.
You saved the day! I'm really curious to know, in you first picture, what is the camera there look like a leica, with the blur i can't read the name. This comment has been removed by the author.
Even my mate 8 picture quality is exceptional how much more mate 9 pro. I am definitely going for my new Huawei Mate 9 Pro. Thank you Huawei for a ground breaking in the smart phone revolutionary world.
I bought A Mate 9 Pro last month and was initially absolutely blown away by the picture quality. I can now confidently say after a month of picture taking and comparing shots with my iphone 7-carrying wife, that the Mate 9 Pro and I'm sure the soon-to-be-released P10 have the best smartphone cameras in the world right now.
Like Robin said, the camera UI is also extremely intuitive. A real 5-star job. Robin, Loved your photos since your Olympus blog days. My question to you is how much photography improvements can be had coming to the Mate 9 Pro from a P9?
I absolutely had a great time with my P9 camera, yeah it's more like my mobile camera now. As I use my Galaxy S6 Edge more as my telephone. So for me, the Mate 9 Pro must really offer quite a step up in terms of camera quality before I do my next upgrade purchase.
Do you think the upgrade is justified? Sifu, I wish you can do comparison between P10,P10 plus and Mate 9pro. Great review, choosing between S7 and Mate 9, but prefer LCD-screen, and this deep review is just what I need, a lot of points for Mate 9!
Same here, I like the look of the Mate 9 when i look at them all in the store together. Something about the phone just stands out or appeals. After reading this in depth review the camera seems awesome.
Everyone pushes the S7 camera and the Pixel but this review certainly seems to show that it can compete and have fun doing so. Learning and wanting to take photos! My only concern was that the phone may be too big to carry around but i suppose you probably get used to it like everything else: Hi Robin, Thanks for doing such an outstanding honest review.
I have been tossing up what to get for my next phone, Mate 9, LG V20, etc.. Agree a lot of tech review sites kind of complain that the camera is mediocre or not good compared to Pixel or Galaxy S7.
However, after seeing your review now I am confident to get the Mate 9. It is the one phone that seems to keep drawing my attention even when I look at others.
The pictures in your review are awesome and i will be more than happy if i can get that type of quality from my own experience. It is a beast of a phone but phones now are more than just a phone.

You may check out the video here click. I am not a tech junkie, and I am sure at this time of writing, there are dozens of tech-oriented reviews focusing on the smartphone aspects of Mate 9 Pro published on the net, everywhere in the world, offering in depth look and informative opinions.
Therefore, there is no reason for me to add another review of a smartphone, which I believe that most of these sites have done a wonderful job reporting. On the other hand, as I have done a quick online research specifically for the camera review of Huawei Mate 9, not much information came up.
As a photo-enthusiast who is obsessed with image quality, camera performance and creating beautiful looking images as a hobby, I shall take a good look particularly at the Huawei Mate 9 Pro's camera imaging capabilities in this blog review.
The shiny exterior was a breath of fresh air, since most of my gadgets and photography gear are in monotonous black color theme. Here at the back of the phone, is the dual camera module, which Huawei claimed to have been developed in collaboration with Leica.
A closer look at the dual camera module. The stand-out feature on this phone surely is the Leica dual camera. First implemented in Huawei P9, Huawei claimed that the dual camera used in the new Huawei Mate 9 and Mate 9 Pro is an improvement over the P9, and this is now the second generation Leica camera.
Based on the product descriptions and specifications you may find the full list here, the following are the highlights:. Portrait mode, true black-and-white photography and a 2. The Huawei finished the task in 58 seconds, a hair faster than the Samsung at 1 minute and 4 seconds. We typically use Adobe Clips for our video editing tests, but the app consistently crashed each time we attempted to run it on the Mate 10 Pro.
There's also the NPU to talk about. Huawei's co-processor is the first in an Android phone built specifically for handling AI. Huawei says the chip will keep the Mate 10 Pro running as smoothly two years into its lifespan as it does the day it's taken out of the box, but for now, that's a claim that we can't substantiate.
The Mate 10 Pro's exceptional battery life is one big reason why you'd opt for this machine over other top flagships. The first time we tested the Mate 10 Pro back in the fall, its 4,mAH battery delivered 14 hours and 33 minutes of web surfing on T-Mobile's LTE network, which was good enough to beat the Note 8 by more than 3 hours.
But that was the international model, which Huawei tells us wasn't optimized for U. We recently got our hands on that U. This Mate 10 Pro lasted six minutes longer, for a total time of 14 hours and 39 minutes.
The other sensor is 12 megapixels, meaning that color photos on the Mate 9 cannot go beyond 12 megapixels; just like on the Huawei P9. Of course, the iPhone 7 Plus boasts the same resolution, so this is not awful by any means, but it just feels like wasted opportunity.
Before we dive into the details of photo quality and there's a lot to cover, there are a few more things to mention. The bokeh mode only works well in ideal conditions, with the subject of the portrait near and flat towards the camera, and the background far in the distance.
Any other conditions and you'll likely to see strange blurry patches in the photo and imperfections around the object that's in the focus. Check out an example, below. Also, the phone boasts some sort of hybrid 2x zoom mode, which is not optical.
I fail to see how this is different from digital zoom, so I mostly disregarded it. The Mate 9 has an 8-megapixel selfie camera, just like its predecessor. But thankfully, the "beauty" mode is no longer the default; gone is the unnaturally smooth skin and bulgy eyes.
The selfies are decent if not spectacular, but this little change means more to me than improvements in picture quality. Finally, the Mate 9 takes 4K video, a first for Huawei.
Huawei places a lot of emphasis on its partnership with Leica, which yielded the company's dual-camera system. The idea is to combine a monochrome sensor that takes very sharp photos with a color sensor to get very sharp color photos.
It worked well on the Huawei P9, but how does it work on the Mate 9, where the monochrome sensor has a higher resolution than the color one? Since I've already done a detailed analysis of P9's photo-taking capabilities, the easiest way to test the Mate 9 is to test it directly against the P9.
Given the enormous amount of features all of these cameras offer, I've mostly taken photos on auto settings, which is the way most users will do it anyways. The short verdict is that the Mate 9 takes very similar photos to the Huawei P9.
They're great and sharp in sunny outdoors shots, but lag behind today's top phones in low light conditions. And if you like black and white shots, the Mate 9 will occasionally take a photo that will beat professional-grade cameras.
Click here to view this gallery. Check out the outdoors shots above. In the park photo comparison below, the Mate 9 takes a stunningly sharp photo, but it looks a bit too post-processed.
The colors are also a bit washed out, while the Canon leans to the blue a bit too much; the P9's photo has the best color accuracy. In the palm photo, it's the P9 that does too much sharpening.
The Huawei Mate 9 gets it just right; both phones produce a far sharper photo than the Canon. In a monochrome photo, the Mate 9 wins over the P9 due to its megapixel resolution.
And while both cameras takes absolutely stunning black and white photos, it's worth noting that pretty much the only thing that separates them is the resolution; in fact, on some occasions the P9 took a better photo.
Go inside a bar or a dark room, however, and the Mate 9 isn't as good. The phone's HDR mode is a must here, but you have to turn it on manually. These days, smartphones are little powerhouses that do a ton of things, and even though people care the most about performance, battery life and camera, it would be very unfair to judge the Huawei Mate 9 on those criteria alone.
The phone comes with a plethora of minor but useful features not many competing phones have. Here's a little list of notes I've made while reviewing this phone. The software has been vastly improved and polished since the Mate 8.
It's not just Android 7. And if you don't like the cram your apps into folders on the screen, iPhone-style, the Mate 9 now has an optional app drawer as well.
