There are lots of options depending on what features you care about. I disagree that the display is the "most-used feature. My most-used feature of my phone is the processor, probably tied with the RAM, and followed closely by the on-board storage.

The OS as a whole fits somewhere in here, including its overall performance and reliability. Next is likely the radios. Then the screen is what I use to interact with all of that.

I think there's a very good argument to be made for a phone that prioritizes doing all of those other things better than others and possibly letting us down on the screen and still being worth owning.

The Pixel XL is slow - 1s or longer. The OnePlus 5 is insanely fast - 0. I've got the original Pixel and, provided it's clean, unlocks in 1s max. And the screen is the main thing you are looking at when using the phone So yeah it sucks big time.

If it doesn't get too much worse too quickly, it's no problem.. The "burn-in" is almost certainly uneven pixel wear, which means that it should stabilize as the phone gets used more.

Not sure, but when I was in the Verizon store last week the Note 8 had serious burn in. Granted those displays are worst case scenario for the phone but it definitely can happen with Samsung's latest as well.

No, it's definitely more extreme than on other phones, but look at the screenshots: What you see is that the area in the navbar with the pixels on is the same brightness as the rest of the screen that normally shows content, and the black area of the navbar is particularly dark.

Burn-in wouldn't cause the lit-up area to look the same as the rest of the screen, and you can't burn-in the black part that's different. Uneven pixel wear is a known thing with OLED and plasma displays, but this one is definitely worse -- maybe it didn't get enough break-in time at the factory or something?

Also the screen burn-in is only on the notification bar and it's easy to not notice it unless you are actively searching for it. You're right, the screen is something we always look at but we also always interact with our phone and the Pixel 2 XL trumps every other android phone by a pretty sizeable amount when it comes to UI interaction, touch response and consistently smooth performance.

It's probably the closest a Android phone has ever gotten to iPhone levels of UI smoothness and performance. That's a very huge plus to some people and may outweigh the draw backs of the display for them.

When you have so many options, it makes day to day things take longer also. As in more clicks to get to what you want. Their sms app is the perfect example of this. Having a separate app store that doesn't want to be turned off is another thing that slows you down.

Because you are constantly having to uninstall or hide apps that you don't want need. But you have to keep that app store for certain things you use to work. It all adds up.

Samsung makes a great phone. No doubt about it. But what makes a Samsung great, also makes it the worst. Yeah, the comparison is against the Pixel, not OP5.

The OP5 has the fastest fingerprint sensor out there, bar none, even the Pixel 2 is significantly slower. The OG Pixel has a slower fingerprint than the S8.

Outside of that, the S8 is a few milliseconds slower at opening apps from cold, and comparable to the Pixel 2 in multitasking. It adds up, sure, but not at the exaggerated rate some people claim it to be.

It's not about speed, but smoothness. About frame stability, animation smoothness, minimal amount of lag, jitter and jank. They're a stuttery mess with animation jank and frame drops all over the place, in comparison.

And these interfaces also have a tendency to degrade on all the above mentioned points over time. It's precisely for these reasons I only use devices by Google or OnePlus. I don't care about speed, I care about the software experience: Unlimited Storage is a big Plus for me and my wife, so yeah, i love those 4k and hi res pics originals.

I have Picture in picture mode, actually even more because I can put every app in a resizable window, move them around, minimize, built-in theme system that is actually quite good and allows me to use black theme right away not like Google's approach - we use OLED screens now, let's make the whole system completely white so it uses as much power as it can and don't give a capability to change it, good power management so my battery life is OK, screen color modes, Dex mode which will be even more functional in the future with Linux on Galaxy, backup system that backups also call logs and SMS so I don't have to use separate apps for that, one handed mode, secure folder, built-in ad blocking system wide capability have to use an app for that but still that don't lock your VPN slot and show notifications.

I would be very interested to hear what the general public thinks of this phone versus bloggers and tech enthusiasts because things just don't add up. The sales figures will give you that answer.

It was most visible on a white screen. I strongly dislike the over-saturated colors of the Samsung. I really like the natural colors of the Pixel and the Apple phones -- their colors are very similar.

The phone is fantastic. One can nitpick about it but in normal use it is just as good as any other screen, and better than Samsung for people who prefer natural color to exaggerated color. I wouldn't put great and screen in the same sentence with the xl 2.

This is the height of fanboyism. I defended that phone to the death until it became unusably slow and I replaced it with an S5. Doing so made realize just how awful the GNex experience really had been.

The Pixel family's only advantage is rapid updates, period. The sad thing about the Android ecosystem is you're forced to choose between that and a decent display or anything else good. I love my pixel 2xl l. Calling the screen garbage is a little much the colors to me are fine sure if I hold it next to my old pixel XL or an s8 the colors will seem dull.. I don't notice any blotchy colors or grain so maybe thats an individual case by case problem.

The only thing I really notice is the cooler shift when viewing from the side But it's not horrible only really noticable on light back grounds and other colors at more extreme angles over all it's still an amazing phone.

My biggest issues is the the curved screen is a gimmick accidental touches, hard to touch sides buttons. But other things that annoy me the fingerprint scanner sucks.

People in other parts of the world can get all their phones unlocked, and are not fucked by carriers like Americans are. When using it directly, the screen is entirely comparable to any other device.

Better user experience is subjective, as you can't do a lot of things on Pixel that you can do on a Samsung. Better battery life is not built into Pixel, in fact many phones with smaller batteries got better battery life than Pixels.

Touch latency is lower on Note 8 than on Pixel and Pixel 2. Better cameras - I might give you that, even though they are complete rubbish in very low light.

One of the great things about Android is that you can buy a different phone instead. There are lots of options depending on what features you care about. I disagree that the display is the "most-used feature.

My most-used feature of my phone is the processor, probably tied with the RAM, and followed closely by the on-board storage. The OS as a whole fits somewhere in here, including its overall performance and reliability.

Next is likely the radios. Then the screen is what I use to interact with all of that. I think there's a very good argument to be made for a phone that prioritizes doing all of those other things better than others and possibly letting us down on the screen and still being worth owning.

Indications are here that the screen's fine. It's not spectacular, but it's fine. Do we all want spectacular? But if the screen's fine, and the rest of the phone is spectacular, for many of us it averages back out to spectacular.

Although the display not being pleasing to look at is more like saying a car has Porche performance but looks like a Camry. It's unfortunate that it looks like a Camry instead of a, but a whole lot of people would still want to drive it because the performance is amazing even though it isn't a looker.

Give it a year and the battery life won't be as good as it is now. As for finger print scanners, anything that is quicker than having to swipe or type a code is better. Moaning about a 1s delay, which I don't personally see on mine, is pretty sad.

If I spent that much on a 'flagship' phone that has a shitty display and any of the other reported problems I would want my money back for that price! I can accept that many people will be fine with this screen, but from what I can tell, it's objectively worse than the 1XL screen.

My Pixel 2 is quickly becoming my favorite phone. It takes gorgeous pictured, has a gorgeous display, feels good and it works so well. It's fast, smooth and elegant in operation.

The question I want to have answered about the "drab" screen is: Is it actually sRGB accurate? Like, I use my Nexus 6P set to sRGB mode in the developer options, because anything other than that looks ridiculously garish and horrid.

Not sure, but when I was in the Verizon store last week the Note 8 had serious burn in. Granted those displays are worst case scenario for the phone but it definitely can happen with Samsung's latest as well.

No, it's definitely more extreme than on other phones, but look at the screenshots: What you see is that the area in the navbar with the pixels on is the same brightness as the rest of the screen that normally shows content, and the black area of the navbar is particularly dark.

Burn-in wouldn't cause the lit-up area to look the same as the rest of the screen, and you can't burn-in the black part that's different. Uneven pixel wear is a known thing with OLED and plasma displays, but this one is definitely worse -- maybe it didn't get enough break-in time at the factory or something?

But the good news is that uneven wear should mitigate over time, not worsen. I don't care if burn in happens a month in as long as my warranty is good to go. In Google we trust.

Also the screen burn-in is only on the notification bar and it's easy to not notice it unless you are actively searching for it. You're right, the screen is something we always look at but we also always interact with our phone and the Pixel 2 XL trumps every other android phone by a pretty sizeable amount when it comes to UI interaction, touch response and consistently smooth performance.

It's probably the closest a Android phone has ever gotten to iPhone levels of UI smoothness and performance. That's a very huge plus to some people and may outweigh the draw backs of the display for them.

I keep seeing people saying that the screen is calibrated to sRGB when no one has actually checked to ensure that this is indeed correct, also, I see the people who have checked the calibration say that the phone is not accurately calibrated to sRGB, as seen on the video from Erica Griffin here at around the 7: Maybe more measurements should be done by some independent parties before we repeat the information from Google's marketing material.

The software is practically flawless, it just works so well. The size is great, I love having a 1 handed device again - The Camera and the power under the hood in such a small form factor is great.
